my first handi
« on: January 13, 2010, 01:58:07 PM »
got my first handi yesterday. its a 500 s&w. absolutely love the gun, and man does it kick like a mule. Looking to see what kind of scope will hold up to this thing, and who has a good deer load worked up for reloading. Just ordered my lee 50th anniverary kit today. cant wait to get started.

I've had a Handi 500 S&W for about 2 weeks now and have not shot it yet. The price of factory ammo for this thing is not right.  I loaded up some 440gr WFNGC and some 385gr Rem. core-lokt bullets to try out and I'm using Lil'gun powder. I have a bushnell banner shotgun scope that I was thinking about mounting on the gun. I plan on using this for a deer gun and I've heard about the recoil and that is to be expected due to the size of the gun and the caliber. I did alot of reading up at the H&R forum here and the FAQ sticky is loaded with excellent information for the Handi rifle. It is starting to warm up a little so I might get the gun out at the range and see what happens.......

Congrats on the new Handi to you both.
I want one, but for the moment only have handi's in .357 .44 .223 and 20 ga ultra slug hunter. From my understanding, they are a hoot to shoot. Also vicious as a deer rifle. When Dinny gets back in town I am sure he will weigh in on the loads for deer. He was loading for it before he traded his off.

Welcome to the forum and the world of Handi's

Well do some research as your mileage may vary. But I have tried a 400 gr cast bullet from missouri bullet company over 10 grains of trailboss. Light plinkin loads that probably would be good deer medicine. At least here in Indiana. Don't have a chrono so don't have exact figures but sure is less punishment than the factory loads. Remember to research yourself and don't trust loads from others!!

i bought me a konus pro 6x40 scope off line for $40 bucks new. have only put factory ammo through it so far, and scope is holding up well for a cheap scope. has glass etched reticle on it. picked up 1000 325gr fngc and 400 365 fn all cast bullets for $50 shipped. Getting ready to start rolling my own. should take me a while to go threw 1400 bullets. right now ive only got about 60 brass. will let you know what i find on a good load for this thing.

I think they offer hip and knee replacements but not sure if they have a shoulder replacement yet. You may want to limit yourself to 500 rounds a year untill they have upper body parts for shooters ;D Have fun with the BEAST :'(

I will def. keep you guys updated on scope and what loads i come up with. thanks to all.

The 500 S&W handi rifles like a stiff load of H Lil Gun, a 385gr Rem Ultra Core-Lokt and a heavy crimp. It's a good deer load and has exhibited some of the best accuracy.

It surely wasn't a rifle, but a friend and I wagered to who could shoot the most hot-loaded 50 AE loads from a Desert Eagle once. I shot 52 before I got to the point that my hands were swelling right before my eyes. The 50 AE is much less power than the 500 S&W and you're shooting a rifle, but will your shoulder hold up to 1400 rounds?  I think so.... I say load them all! You definitely would learn to either deal with the recoil or sell the rifle to someone else.  We're here for you, whenever you're ready to sell it!  ;) ;D LOL

Thanks, Dinny
