Log jams in small creeks are excellent places to block off and force beaver and otter to pass through where you place your trap.  I like to force them to dive under a log to pass a conibear trap.

I realize I didn't answer your question but I didn't want you to abandon the log jam if you know animals are passing through.  You might also catch coon and bobcat who walk across logs to reach the opposite bank.

If the bank is right for a den, yes they may. Like all animals, they will take the easiest route ,if that is under a log jam or under tree roots,if it works for them.
I have seen a beaver take over a large muskrat house, and turn it into its lodge. They don't work any harder than they have to.
