Compact scope
« on: January 14, 2010, 03:08:08 AM »
I have searched the forums looking for suggestions on a compact light scope for my future 243 Handi Compact. I saw some good suggestions, but in alot of old posts. Just wondering in anything new is out on the market since then or if you have a favorite tried and true preformer. I would like to stick to a fixed power, something like a 4X and proable in a 32mm. I know in glass it is better to get the best you can afford, but this is for my young son, so I'm sure it might get a little abuse in the beginning. Looking for something in the $100 under range. Anyone have suggestions?

well I just got a Millet DMS, 1-4 it has a circle dot, that can be illuminated red or green, its nice short works great, but its only 24.

Ive used compact shotgun scopes 4x that have been really nice to have on my .44mag, sadly I broke it. It was a burris. pretty nice though.

burris makes the short mag line in a few diff models if I remember

These guys will be a great source of info. They sure gave me all the info I needed and more. You may want to look at Pentax or Nikon. Shop sales and classifieds.

I own several Nikon and I am very pleased with them. I aquired my first Pentax a few months ago and have used it very little so I am not that familiar with them yet. The weight is one of my main concerns. I am trying to keep this gun as light as possible. Thanks everyone.

I have an old Made in Japan Bushnell 4x on mine. Bright and clear. Mine was in the junk pile at home but I see takeoffs in gun stores for about $25 fairly often. Look for "Made in Japan" and check clarity and focus. New ones are becoming collectible on Ebay but those guys have little interest in used.

i talked to a guy at the gun shop that has a konus 4x32 on his 500 and has had no problems with it. they are supposed to be 100% water, fog, shock, and recoil proof. and they have a life time warrenty. you can pick one up off line for around $50. im got a 6x40 on order will let you know how it does on my 500.

This was just discussed recently, the Weaver 4x32 at Natchez would get my vote for a 4x scope, it's 9.5" long, weighs 8.7oz, made in Japan, $92 shipped for a $250 scope, a great glass, I have two of them. ;)  http://www.natchezss.com/product.cfm?contentID=productDetail&prodID=SN849421

On the Konus note, I have a 3-9 X 50mm on my single shot .223 and love it. It is a great buy for the money. If you want a fixed power 32 mm though that Weaver Tim mentioned sounds like a deal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have one of those Weavers.  Good, clear sight picture and seems reliable.  Word is that these are among the best Japanese scopes for the money.

I made the mistake of mounting a Nikon Buckmasters 4.5-14x40 mil dot on my .308 Ultra.
After a few trips to the range I found out that this scope was not Handi and way to big for my taste. I think more range time and a smaller glass will work better and made it a better shooter for me.
I've scaled back to your scope suggestion Quick and have the Weaver 4x 32 on order from Natchez. Going to try and test mount with medium Burris Sig rings for clearance.
If theres enough room and I can get away with low rings, I may switch down the road for a lower profile.

Gary,  the medium rings will work fine, I have one in Burris Zee low rings, the frame had a hammer bob before I mounted this scope, but wouldn't be necessary I don't think, it has plenty of clearance now!

I've been looking at a Simmons 2-7X32 Pro-hunter scope for $59.95 or about $75.00 delivered from Natchez. At just under 10 ozs., I think it would be a great scope to mount on my new Handi Superlight with the whole package ending up under 6lbs. Here's a link to the scope at Natchez.

Doesn't look to be Handi friendly with that huge power ring and ocular bell.  :-\

The looks are a bit deceiving, I have some of the 3X9-40 prohunters and they are smaller than the picture looks.  DP

I think I'll take a ride to Cabelas in the morning and see what they have in their bargain cave. I've picked up some good buys on scopes there before. I like the clarity and brightness of Simmon's Pro-hunter line so I'll take a look at that while I'm at Cabelas and see if it looks like it would work on a Handi. I had a 3-9X40 Pro-hunter on my Marlin 1895 and it held up working up 45/70 loads and now is being used on my .260.

I have a Simmons 3x9 on one of my rifles.  It's about the usual size but is very light weight.  I like it a lot for $69!  It can help shave some needed weight off some of these rifles.  I also have an old Tasco 4x on my 30-30 that does a good job.  44 Man.

44 Man,
Thanks, I just looked on their website and the 3-9X40 Pro-hunter only weighs 10.8 ozs. I think I could easily live with that.

Well my Weaver 4x32 came and I mounted it.

Before: The Nikon 4.5-14x40 mil dot it was sporting

After: Much better feel. The glass was good and I think I'm going to like it better. -g

That 4x32 Weaver looks interesting, but is there any "fish eye".

I can't stand scopes that have distortion.

Never noticed any distortion with my weavers - but both are of recent manufacture.  Can't vouch for the older ones.

The Weaver 4x32 Shotgun scope is an excellent Japan made scope, bright and clear edge to edge, it also has a 100yd parallax setting.  ;)
