New Barrel Help

Hi all,
Just purchased a new 10" 30-30 barrel.
The prevoius owner said it was new and he had not shot it.
It locks up fine but will not open.
Is there anythig I can do or do I need to take it to a gun smith and have the early barrel fitted?

Some barrels lock up tight and will not open. I had the same problem with a new barrel that I know for sure was new.Now if you feel that you are good with tools you can remove barrel pin and get it off the frame it may come right off and then you may have to work at it some. Take a knife sharpening stone and hold it at the same angle as the locking lug and polish it a few times and try it to see if it unlockes if not try the same thing again you may have to do this several times till it will release. One more question does the barrel have the split locking lug if not you may need to call tc for a split type. If you are not good with tools and feel you cannot do this then take to a gunsmith. I only had to do my barrel 2 times before it worked great. It does take some time but like I say if you are not good with tools and gunsmithing best to let a smith do it should not be too expensive. good luck

Are you honing the egde that is paralell to the barrel face or the chamfered edge along the bottom?

I use a sharpie and cover all the mating surfaces.  then I close and open it a few times and polish the areas where the sharpie ink has rubbed off.  Polish is all I have ever had to do. Go slow and try often.

I had this problem recently and called Thompson Center for advice on how to open and remove the barrel....They told me to get a rubber mallet and strike the finger guard sharply, much more pressure than I could apply by hand, and it opened for removal.....The problem was that I had a solid lug instead of a split lug on the barrel.....TC sent me a split lug at no charge to replace the solid lug........If I were you I would call TC and speak to them directly.

How did you hold the gun? I would think thatthis would work but the gun would have to be hold in a vise of some sort to take advantage of this method.

That is exactly what they suggested and what I did......My first whack was sort of tentative, but the second time I gave it a good rap and it opened right up.......Worked for me and I hope it works for you....Good luck.

One more thing.....I took the grip off, but that was not suggested by TC.

Thank you for explaining. I have been trying to get DEACONLLB to explain his method to everybody for a couple of weeks or so and have never got an explaination. I will try this out tonight.

jumpsteady if you will read the second reply you will see where I showed how to do this and one of the other fellows even has a picture and keith showed how you use a sharpie and file or hone in the area where the black or blue is removed to get it to open. dont know what else to say, except if you are not mechanical inclined take it to a smith.
