Shorter screw for a MDL 94 30-30
« on: January 14, 2010, 03:41:39 PM »
I have an old model 94 30-30 that has a scope mount on it, just the base.  The base is mounted on the upper left side of the reciever.  I took the base off, and in doing so, the bolt hangs up, if I run the longer screw back in, it hangs the bolt up, this offending screw is most likely as it is to adapt for the tickness of the base,my question is, what is this screw called and where can I get a factory replacement.  I'd like to shoot it without that ugly base on there, but its a no-go until I get the right screw for the action to function as it should.

Can you give us a picture? There are numerous old base mounts that mount several different ways. A pic would help, and I am sure I can help you.

I'll get a pic when I get home from work and post it up, after looking at schematics, I'm not 100% sure what model 94 I have other than its a post 64, top eject I think.

OK, read the tutorial and resized, see if it works.....fingers crosed...holy cow thats a technological leap for me.  Anyhoe, where the pen is pointing is the screw that when taken out, the action binds up and something comes loose, excuse my ignorance, I've never had to work on many guns, guess thats a good thing of sorts.  So, what is it and where is a good place to get a replacement, and this is simply a top eject model 94 right?  I got it years ago at a pawn shop for 50.00, I liked it because of its brown patina and worn character, it resides hung in a set of spurs in my gun room above the safe, I've shot it a few times and can easily hit a pie plate at 100 with it.  Just had a desire to shoot it some more but that scope base is hideous on there.

That screw is called a lever pin cover screw and call Numrich Arms for the part. They should be able to supply the screw. And while you wait on the part, just take the screw out and file it down flush with the inside of the received. It will work just fine like that. It is there to cover a drift pin in the bolt, and keep it from working out. Once you get it close put the screw back in, and with a small file dress it down flush with the side of the receiver.
If you can't get it done get a file email me with a phone number, and I'll walk you thru it.

I had a gunsmith buddy of mine now deceased tell me that winchester had changed the threads a few times over the years.
Perhaps you should have the serial number handy when you call. I had a side mount scope base somewhat similar to yours and it came with three different screws. Since the screws should not be all that expensive order one of each if they have more than one size listed. Hope this helps. Frank

Oh, BTW, the lever pin cover screws are different in the pre and post 64 models.

seemes to me under that screw is a small pill that keeps the firing pin in the bolt. When I pulled the mount off my gun I had no idea something was to be in there. in any case I had to by the part to keep the firing pin in otherwise it would tip out the back when the gun was cocked. I also bought the factory replacment screw. now all is well in 94 land
