i need help deciding on the best to start with a ruger 77/22 .22 or a ruger 10/22 .22.which is the best barrells and stocks there is a lot to pick from.the last rifle i built had a clark barrell it was a 10/22 it was a good shooting gun but it was heavy.it had the .920 srait bull barrell with no flutes in it.i did the triger myself it is pretty easy to work on.also i am thinking about selling a couple i have two NEF one is a .22 and the other is a.17 mach2.i also have a remington 572 .22 i might keep it.do anyone no what the NEF are selling for.also any advice on the two ruger rifles will be very helpfull.

To me the Ruger 77-22 is just too clunky feeling. Ruger has a bad habit of squaring off the stock on their rifles just forward of the trigger guard area which to me is a huge turn off.

As to accuracy I think you can get parts for either to turn them into quite accurate rifles but if you want a light weight the 10-22 platform I think can be made up into a much lighter rifle.

I have a Magnum Research 10-22 clone. To me it's a vastly superior product to the Ruger and comes with the receiver machined to accept the scope base rather than having bases as an add on. Mine has the graphite carbon wrapped bull barrel and Hogue over moulded stock. It's lighter I believe than an old Remington Nylon 66 or at least weights no more. You can actually buy one of these as cheap or more cheaply I think than buying a Ruger 10-22 and then modifying it to equal the MR rifle. MR makes them in .22 LR, .22 Mag and both the .17 rimfires I believe.

The only Ruger part on them is the magazine. They have all the bells and whistles folks add to their 10-22s right from the factory. They offer a fairly wide selection of stock options and barrel options as well right from the factory.

The 77/22 and 10/22 are quite possibly the least accurate rifles in their perspective classes. Saying that, I have had the 10-22 bug for 15 years or better. My newest build wears a 28" sporting contour barrel. With subsonic rounds it is quieter than the impact on a squirrel.

If you decide bolt action, may want to look at a CZ 452. Out of the box they are more accurate than most 10-22 or 77-22 ultimate builds. They are cheaper as well in the long run.

The newest 10-22s have very slender stocks.  You can't hardly beat the Marlin 39A IMO.

I have 3 10/22's and a 77/22H and like all of them.  I have a few other bolts and single shots
But my go to small game gun is the CZ 452.  It is a well made gun with proper proportions.
they make a number of sixes aand styles.
I have been looking at the 452 American 16" as a bushy tail rifle in 22 LR.
The flush 5 round mags are sturdy and will feed both LR as well as CB Longs for quiet mornings in the Pecan grove.  The ruger rotary mag will not feed the shorter shells.

Can't go wrong with the CZ.
I'm very happy with my Savage Mark II, though.

Course, for hunting, my 25+ year old Glenfield Mod 60 shoots pretty lights out.

I have an old Marlin Glenfield Model 60 with a Leupold 2X7 Vari-X II on it. For me it doesn't get much better, and I have owned a lot of squirrel rifles. I'll get as many as the high dollar rifles given the same chance.

The Marlin 60 is a remarkable rifle.

Mine has the oak leaf pattern and checkering. I sighted it in on a dime at 25 yards. Hitting a dime at that range with a small rest is not a problem. If ole bushy tail sit still very long, I'll get him in the eye.

Our church bought a Model 60 and a 12 gauge Pardner for some young men in the church who can't afford to hunt.  I picked them up today.

I've got a old JC Higgens, made by mosburg, that my dad gave me when I turned 14. I've killed a lot of squirrels with it. Getting hard to see the sights anymore though.

While living in new mexico my son & I would hunt tassel eared squirrels in the fall. I could still shoot them in the head with open sights in those days. My son asked me, dad how do you do that? Well I shot a brick of 22lr through that gun every week for years. That much shooting with the same gun really improves your accuracy.

I know what ya mean about the sights pastorp. I have been shootin my ole 3030 for a little over a half century now, but even with a peep sight it's startin to get hard to see that front sight. My Model 92 has helped with the 24" barrel ,but even that is startin to get a little fuzzy, and that has a peep sight too.
