« on: January 15, 2010, 08:24:38 AM »
Have been out of the nef/h&r for awhile. What are the going prices for a basic handi form wallyworld? Just looking for a cheap 223 or 204, 22-250 for predators.

I was at the local Walmart (down here in S. Texas) yesterday. Saw these: Pardner 12 gauge @ $117.00; .223 Handi w/scope @ $279.00. Both the wood stock versions. BTW, the guy at the gun counter said they would special order guns....apparently some stores don't based on what I've read in some forums.

I priced a 30-30 at wal mart and it was $249 and the walmart was an hour drive from my house. The mom & pop shop a mile up the road got it for me for $244.

Prices went up a little since I posted this: http://www.gboreloaded.com/forums/index.php/topic,28366.0.html Considering how much everything else went up they haven't climbed all that much.

Glad you folks have a Walmart that sells guns. None of the ones in my area do anymore.

To be honest I don't buy from my local Walmart, but do use them to check on prices. I have a local FFL that's family owned and been in business since 1870. I've already paid a premium to him rather than buy from Walmart. Nothing personally against Walmart, but I'd rather see the local FFL stay in business. Just try taking a rifle back to Walmart when it has a problem. Want a good laugh tell the teenager behind the counter at Walmart that your thinking of trading a rifle in.

Checked the local Wally's for a 45-70.  They'd order a 22" syn stock for $250.

Ended up picking up one LNIB from a very nice fellow with to many projects for $215 instead.

Now I need to get some dies, brass and boolits!  405 cast good place to start,eh?

If you think you might want to cast you own the Lee 459-405-HB is a good mould.  Also consider the Remington 405 grain jacketed bullets.

Not to change subjects, but the Dicks Sporting Goods store has the camo synthetic stocked bull barrel combo's in 223, 22-250, or 308 for $299.  They go on sale there from time to time for $249 or so.  I bought one of the 308's for that price a month or so ago.  Had a $10 off coupon, so rifle, 4X12 no name scope, rings, and all the other junk that comes in the box went for $255 out the door.

Walmart's website doesn't show prices on their guns any more because prices vary by store.

I suspect Wally's prices vary so much from store to store because local, county, & state business taxes they pay are so different from one locale to another.................I would suspect low business tax rates in rural areas & tax rates thru the roof in major urban areas...............

Wally built an uber super-duper center about 5 blocks from me a couple of years ago. I went to all the city planning meetings & neighborhood meetings - it was a real eye-opening experience on how things get done. In spite of UNANIMOUS opposition from all city planning boards & commissions involved, UNANIMOUS opposition from all neighborhood groups & homeowner's associations, Wally somehow made it happen.....
I don't doubt one bit that Wally agreed to some extra business taxes or to a higher tax rate to get it done...............

All this to say I priced a 45 Colt Classic Carbine at my local Wally's & the price was $370, out the door - pretty steep compared to what I've seen them going for other places - I have no doubt higher price reflects higher cost of doing bidness at this location.

I had the counter guy at Wally Land get some prices for me on a 7mm08 and 45-70 and 500 s&w before Christmas, then I ask to see if they had any in stock. A day later he called back with a N.I.S report (NONE IN STOCK) wasted time is all that I got. Check the H&R site for dealers in your area and give them a call. My local Small town dealer has some old stock priced on hand no waiting. 223. bull, wood stock $219. 280 syn stock $239 7mm 08 wood stock $229 45-70 wood stock $239 . The 7mm08,.280 and 45-70 came home with me.Good luck and shop local.   ;D  26-t

sounds fairly homogeneous, 127$ is the price here for the shotguns, 289$ for the rifle- with the scope. I usually buy through a friend with an FFL, but he said his cost was 215$ plus shipping for std calibers . That was just before christmas when I bought one for a gift.Wound up costing me total of 245$. Only a few of the "superstores" still carry guns. They do have ammo again, although it goes fast. They still sell 22's cheaper than my lgs can buy them for. $14.47 a brick for the 550 bulk Federal. I read the thread about the xtra barrels going up, I expect the guns to follow.

Within my metro area, I consider Walmart, BassPro, Cabelas, Dicks Sporting Goods, Olathe Gun Shop, Crossfire in Independence, Grafs, Midway, Midsouth, and CheaperThanDirt are all competing for my dollar, for many different things. I believe we should be spreading our dollars  around (when we have them). When I set up for my H&R Hornet and reloading, I spent money at BassPro, Grafs, Midway, Walmart, and a coworker who ran an FFL with his dad, because no others had what I needed when I needed it. When I seriously go looking for shooting related stuff, I am very lucky as I make a circuit that includes Dick's, Walmart, BassPro, Crossfire, Olathe Gun Shop and Cabelas. It is amazing the abundance of choices I have.

For several years now Walmart has been trying to get out of the sporting goods bussiness. I was recently told by my friends that work sporting goods at the local store that their department is getting remodeled, trimmed back and move to a different location in the store...to make room for electronics.

Walmart has been on ammo manual order for a while. Meaning not enough stock for regular orders, they have to check in with the warehouse and see what they can get. Just a PITA for the management they have working in the stores. Was told by one of them last week that manual order was coming off due to supply being up, that they would have an automatic restock every week based on what sold and that he would get a lot more ammo in. This Sat he had a pile of 9mm. Go figure. The guys working in my local WM are diehard shooters and gun traders BTW. Any question I ask, they have an decent response to. Plus we BS about the deals that they got or the guns they sold. For example, one got an H&R for $40 last week. What I like about WM is their prices. The local gun stores shop there and stock their own shelves. But if you wait until the last day of hunting season or fishing season or muzzleloader season, etc, WM often has incredible deals. Plus they are open 24x7. I like to patronize the little guys, but of the 3 closest gun stores, 2 are closed Sunday and the last 1 is open from 11am-1pm. I have a kid that naps. Does not work for me.

The Walmart near me sells guns pretty reasonably priced.  I bought my Versa-pack there for under $120 (synthetic youth version w/o case). Should have bought two! Seems the local dealers know what Walmart keeps in stock and they stock/sell what Walmart doesn't.  Can't beat 'em on ammo prices, when they have it.
