I reworded my question to see if that would get any responses.  I know how to take off the barrel assembly but wanted to find out if the lugs are contained in a seperate piece and if a different barrel could be just screwed into it, and properly headspaced of course.  If so, is it the same barrel threading as a 700? Or a common thread?? If I wanted to go to a short cartridge with the same bolt head size do i need to do anything other than get a new magazine?
Thanks in advance.

Accuracy ststems does a lot of custom work on the Rem pumps and autos. Look them up they may give you some good info.

Yes the barrel has a threaded shank and the locking lugs can be simply unscrewed and threaded onto a new barrel. The threads are not the same but  but when threading with a lathe they are not a problem. Removing the barrel extension is a real problem but it can be done. There are no problems switching to a short action caliber,,other than mags..

I remember they are 20 tpi, and at some point went from RH to LH threads, maybe at 760-7600 transition, the rh threads had a nasty habit of unscrewing from bolt rotation and creating phenominal headspace problems, one of the reboring guys, does almost all calibers out to 358 win, or 35 whelen, depending on long or short, the job runs 225 as I remember, not bad for making a woods thumper!
