There is a website where a couple of guys post their out west coyote hunting tales. They call it the Coyote Gods which has always kinda pissed me off and we've clashed over that on more than one occasion. I suspect they've killed about as many coyotes as anyone in the US tho.

Their cartridge of choice to save the hides and sell them is the .17 Remington. I have to question how much real world expeience with it anyone has who doubts it based on their experience of killing thousands with it.

I would think a 17 Remington would leave a pinhole going in and blow up like a grenade inside them. Seems pretty close to ideal if you want to keep the fur.
It's just a guess on my part. I've never shot a 17 Remington so by no means am I an expert.
I have shot them with my 35 Whelen. It didn't do the fur any favors. I don't really recommend it for 'yotes.

I shoot a .17 Remington and it does work.  There are lots of stories about wind and lots of other things, but the truth is that the .17 remington is just plain made to kill Coyotes.  There is no perfect round for any animal, but the .17 Remington is about the closest you will find for taking Coyotes most any place in the country.  They do have some problems with fouling up with copper after a dozen or two shots, but how many shots do you take at a Coyote in a day?  These are very specialized rifles, they are really good for one thing, killing a Coyote and saving the fir. The .204 Ruger is close, but the .17 Remington is still the King.  There is nothing better at the job than a .17 Remington with a 25 gr Berger match HP out of about a 24 inch barrel.  Larry

Most of our coyote hunting is done by spotting them and running them. Many days we fire more than a dozen shells each. I cannot say that I have ever shot a coyote that was not running. In my opinion, an AR15 in 223 is the perfect coyote rifle. We are up to 78 coyotes this winter, we are geniouses on where we set our armchairs.
