Another primer Question?
« on: January 16, 2010, 04:41:15 PM »
I have in my possesion a brick of cci magnum pistol primers.(only ones I could find) never used them before. my hornady book says WLP primers used in data. My lyman information says cci LP. My speer book only indicates use of magnum primers with a few powders, 296,H110,and HS-7, Is it safe to use Magnum primers with a powder like 2400 if you back off of max loads to min loads and work back up within the manual recommendations ?

Usually, yes. Start low and be observant.

Yes - start low and work up. You will be fine. Stay observant and you'll be fine.

You will notice that Winchester does not make a large pistol magnum primer. Oversight?  Or testimony to how they feel about their standard primers.

Oldshooter, yes you have it right in your original post cut back and work up. Actually, since Winchester (Olin) only produced ball powders I always figured their WLP primer was a bit hotter than std primers by other makers. So they are close to magnum performance anyway to light those harder to start ball powders. At one time Winchester did make a magnum pistol primer, I may still have a few. But for a long time I used the WLP for all my loads to keep it simple. Now I use what I can get.

I'd think you'd be fine with mag primers a "slower" powder like 2400, 4227 for sure - I'd have to look but I have probably used this combination.  I would much prefer to avoid mag primers with the truly fast powders like Bullseye, Red Dot etc.

Thanks fellas this is sounding good since I bought the mag primers on the chance that I could use them, since they were all I could get at the time.
