Need an answer fast.Please.
« on: January 16, 2010, 05:12:36 PM »
Hi all. I want a Pardner very bad and they are hard to come by in Wichita, Kansas. Dick's has a 12 gauge and a .410 but I was wanting the 20 gauge. I can't stand it any longer so I am thinking about buying the 12 gauge. I have shot alot of 12 gauge pumps and over and unders without any problem. How much recoil should I expect from a Pardner?

If you get that 12 ga. maybe you can trade here for a 20ga? The 20 is the one that is in most demand though. Never shot the 12 ga but I am sure someone else here will give their opinion. good luck and welcome to GBO!

Thanks. Im 6'3 and 150 pounds and I am just concerned about shooting a single shot 12 gauge. LOL. I would only shoot 2 3/4 ounce 8 shot shells through it, but I am still concerned. I need an answer fast because if I hear good things then I will buy it tomorrow.

Unless you are especially recoil sensitive, I don't think you'll have a problem with most 12 gauge field loads. Buckshot & slugs in 3" and 3 1/2" give some people a little trouble, but 2 3/4" field loads shouldn't be too much for you. Get a limbsaver pad put on the gun, and make sure the LOP is right for you...not too long; not too short. You could also start with Winchester lite target loads to get used to the gun...and stay away from "express" and "long range" loads early on. 12 gauge provides the most versatility if you can handle it, and it's by far my favorite, though the 20 is a awfully good gauge too, and if you're looking for a woods loafing gun, it's hard to beat. All JMO.

I'm not recoil sensitive. I can shoot double ought buck out of my 12 gauge Benelli Nova no problem. What size of Limbsaver slip on pad do I want for the 12 gauge? I feel like getting another 12 gauge is the right choice.

Don't know the size. I don't like slip-on pads personally. You'd of course want to measure the height and width of the Pardner butt and then check the limbsaver slip-on pads to get the right size. Remember, proper fit goes a long way in mitigating felt recoil. Unless you're lucky with a slip-on's fit, a professionally installed standard pad with the length-of-pull that's right for you would be the way to go. All JMO, of course.

If you are not recoil sensitive, go buy the 12. It is not that bad and I am recoil sensitive. ;)

I never installed a recoil pad on mine until I wanted to take it for turkeys. 2 3/4" field loads are not a problem.

STX,

Man if I had my heart set on a 20 ga Pardner, I would be using all my resources. Call Pawn shops, Hardware stores, look under FFL in phone book. I don't know if Dicks has a special ordering program, Walmart or Kmart maybe be able to help. Quick had a link to Walmart special order, but I don't have it anymore. It maybe time for a road trip to Basspro in Springfield, MO. The only experince I have with a 12 ga. single shot is with a Sears Ranger (H&R M-48) In my younger days I used it for squirrel hunting 1 1/8 oz game loads. I wasn't to happy with the recoil. I used it this summer to protect the sweet corn one time. I used a 2 3/4 Magmun lead #2 for a raccon, after that the Little 20 ga. went into service.

Good Luck and Find you a 20 ga.

What will the gun be used for? How much will you shoot it? Any of the auction sight or numerous online sources will ship one to your local ffl. It's silly to buy a 12ga if you want a 20. My solution to your problem would be to buy both!

I'm recoil sensitive. My first Pardner was a 3.5" turkey model in 12 gauge. It performed fantastic if you can handle the recoil but I decided to step down to a 20 and I'm much happier with it. 2 3/4" field loads aren't bad in the 12, though for me anyways.

I have several different H&R shotguns, 12 ,16, 20, 28, and .410. The 12 shoud not be a problem, but if you want a 20, wait for, or order, a 20. Can you try another chain? Cabella's, Wal Mart, Bass ProShops? Or better still, try a local gun store. Bette
r to pay a local store $10-$15 more and get the 20 you want than save a few bucks and get a 12 you might not want. Of course, you could always buy the 12 and watch for a used 20 gauge barrel here in the H&R classifieds. That's my $.02....<><....:)

As someone here once said, recoil is in the shoulder of the beholder...

Personally, I don't find it excessive for game loads, but with slugs, it rocks you pretty good....

if you think you'll ever want to fire slugs, go for the 20.  my 12 doues great with shot, but firing slugs has horried accuracy.  both 20's however (1-26" 1-22") produce phenomanal results with fed. tru-ball 2 3/4".

get the 12 you can always shoot 20 gauge size payloads through. remember you can make a 12 shoot like a 20 but you can't make a 20 shoot like a 12

I tried all the local gun shops with no luck. Wal-Marts here no longer sell guns so basically my only option is Dick's. The nearest Cabela's is in Kansas City and I dont feel like spending $100 worth of gas for a $100 gun. lol. I shoot clay targets with my buddies but it isn't anything serious, and I just like walking through the woods and getting what I can. If I ever need to shoot big shells I'll just use my trusty Nova 12 gauge. Thanks for all of your help guys. I appreciate it. I

I have grind to fit Limbsavers on all my New England singles both 12's and 20's, first thing I do after buying.  Download the 12 as needed and you'll be fine, my 20 with anything serious fired through it kicks me as hard as my 12.  Either will get my attention but its not like I'm gonna do a round of skeet with one anyhow.

The man is an idiot, there is nothing to respect. Your not asking for the mans trust. Lay your money down, he orders the rifle. If he doesn't, ask to see the manager. Remember, your the customer!!

Does Dick's have a policy that you must be 21? If not the salesperson needs to shut his hole and take care of his customer. Look for another shop as someone else already suggested. If nothing else a lot of pawn shops are FFL's and would be happy to order if for you.
