Scope block on Barrel
« on: January 17, 2010, 06:59:34 AM »
Anybody seen or have any thoughts about mounting a scope base on the barrel directly in front of the receiver ring?

I saw a pic of two matching mauiers made this way some years ago.  Just wondered if anyone  else has done it or seen it?

How would that impact eye relief?  Might need a scope set up for that distance.

Doesn't effect eye relief, but you need a scope with a sufficiently long tube that the front ring, mounted directly in front of the receiver ring on  the rear of the barrel, will encircle the scope tube.  There are many that will, including Old Weaver K-2.5 X, Redfield 2-3/4X, Leupold 1x5x.

Here a picture of one sniper rifle

Remington use to sell the old 40x it was taped for the Unertl scope blocks.  Redfiield,Unert,Lyman and others made scope that would work with scope blocks.

Back in the olden day that is the way it way done because of the technology of the times. Rifle scopes were long and had no internal adjustment. With the techonolgy we have today there is no good reason to do it that way, not because that won`t work any more, but it is just so much hander to mount scopes on the recevier. Unless you putting a handgun scope on a guide rifle or something similar.

Ruger 77V bull barrel in 220 Swift hand loads with 3200 Redfield 20x on blocks. One of the best varmit setups I ever shot. To me with the long barrel and scope the cross hairs have less movement at high power than shorter scopes.
RIP Mike. Died on July 14th, around 2am, with his family at his side, he went peacefully to be with god.

I have a martini cadet action rifle in 22 hornet and its scope mount is on the barrel just in front of the receiver.  This was the way my gunsmith preferred to mount a scope on a cadet martini.

OK, I`ll admit it, they do look sexy, and I do have an old model 37 Rem. with a 20X Leichard scpoe on it that I shoot in local .22 rimfire bench shoots. These scopes are kinda like classic car, fun to look at and more fun to drive.  ;)

I have a redfield 24x that I swap occasionally back and forth between a model 52 winchester (1946 same as me) and a H&R
model 12 from the cmp. I like the 52 better as it has a kenyon trigger that feels like breaking a glass rod. But the H&R is no slouch either. Weighs a ton got it when they had them on sale for $300 with the palma sight and front globe site. Used to joke that you bought the sights and got the rifle for free. Next scope to be mounted will be a 10x lyman all american with adjustable objective on one of my 22rf bsa martini's. Can't use the irons as well as I used to 63 year old eyes. Frank

it can be done and looks very good.
i've seen more that a few of them on custom bolt rifles where the owner wanted something different or didn't want to cover a nice crest, such as is on a peruvian 1909 or a banner mauser.
the way it is normaly done is a quarter rib is dovetailed for the front foot of a claw mount and the front ring is fitted to the objective bell. swing mounts can also be used.
recknagel sells both claw, swing mounts & the correct front rings for this.

;D Roper,  when I first started shooting guys still used these quite a bit,,,(the Unertl....) I had a 4x Hawk, but traded it for a 2-8 B & L...still use it...but I never got to use one of the fine Unertl target or varmit scopes....if you have, what would you  recommend  for crow and chuck shooting on the east coast..I have a couple 6.5-20's by  Leupold with dots...I like them, but would love a classic old Unertl...I checked the site you mentioned and it looked like one of the 2" varmiter or target models might be what I want I would like something 15 power or more...if you have used these what would you suggest??????????????

I have the following rifles Rem 513T, 52 win, H&R model 12 and a model 70 target rifle. All are set up for use with either the older long tube scopes like the lyman STS and Redfield 3200. But the model 70 is also drilled and tapped (factory) for both standard 1" rings and adaptor plate for either a redfield international or olympic. Even the BSA martini MK's 1,2,3 are set up for the longer scopes. Frank

Frank46:  is that M70 Target Rifle a original Winchester production Target Rifle??  I have one made, or at least serial numbered in 1946 that has the stripper clip guide.  It also wears a HART Barrel that had previously been tapped for a barrel mounted scope.  Does yours have the stripper clip guide, and do you know when it was made???  Thanks.

A M-1 A Socom comes weith a rail for scope mounting affixed to the bbl scout fashion . There is a hole in the hand guard to allow this . I removed the mount and replaced the handguard with a standard one and group size got smaller . When you attach things to bbls you run the risk of changing harmonics and accy. If i had a tack driver i would think hard before putting anything attached to the bbl.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !
