The after deer season blues
« on: January 17, 2010, 08:38:32 AM »
Terrrible season!  Didn't get to hunt half as much as I wanted to!   >:(   Now I've got to make time to get down to the farm and pick up all my gear, take down my stands, that sort of stuff.   :-\

Oh well, at least we can small game, varmints, sheds and maybe hogs 'till turkey season opens in March...  ;D

Bama season doesn't end until January ends but I've not gone out hunting a single day so far and don't see that changing.

I had a great season, and hunted more than I'd like to. I'd rather have been busier working, but I'm grateful for the time afield.

Next year, I hope I don't have so much time on my hands, unless I get a LOT of contract work before then.
Jesus said we should treat other as we'd want to be treated... and he didn't qualify that by their party affiliation, race, or even if they're of diff religion.

I got to hunt a bunch for the first few weeks. Seen plenty of deer and shot a doe for the freezer. After the time changed I couldn't get to the stand in time to hunt during the week. I enjoyed what time I did get to hunt. Maybe with some luck I can find some hog hunting close by. Can't hardly wait for the fish to start biting again.

We have more hogs than we know what to do with....  it will be pork hunting for Jan Feb Mar until opening of turkey season here.  No time for blues just tending to food plots and such.

Graybeard, my brother has a farm in Ala. and invited me to hunt this year.  I really considered it until I saw the cost of out of state license.  If I had started earlier...maybe.

We're really not that high as out of state fees go or at least last time I looked at out of state fees it was less than $180 I think with no tags and no draw and two deer a day in most counties. I've never paid less in any state I've gone to for hunting than an out of state hunter pays here.

It's $275.00 now.  Had I started at the beginning of the season that would have been not too bad.  Got the invite the end of Dec.  I figured I might get to go once or twice if lucky.

Wow didn't realize it had taken that big a jump. Still compared to other states the price is certainly in line and especially for how long and generous out season is. Bama isn't a trophy deer destination but if you have connections in the right areas there are some mighty nice bucks to be had.

We've always been a bit more about quantity than quality of deer here. Still I have seen some really nice bucks taken even on public lands.

My hunting buddy's youngest son spent a week at the farm the first of January and didn't see anything.  He went back to Alabama, where he lives and just sent us this picture of a buck he killed the other day.

My brother went last Sat. afternoon, and was putting his gear in order when a 10 point walked into the yard at the farm house and commenced eating some shrubs.  His rifle was still unloaded, so he shot him with his 357, backed up and loaded him up.  Didn't even have his boots on.  Kinda ruins the whole hunting idea.  I told him he should have let that one walk but he kinda disagreed. :D

She's as good as can be expected, this cold, wet wx we're having makes her arthritis bad, but other then that she's fine.  She's gonna retire at the end of this school year!

Folks, this here's my best old pal Gil from down Warner Robbins way.  Biker extrodinar, CAS shooter without peer, and just a darn fine feller and good friend.  And you ain't lived until you taste his wife's cookin!

;D ;D I hear ya on the Filipino wife.  Mine has threatened to perform the "Lorana Bobbitt" move on me if she ever caught me messin around. :o  Been with her 10 years and not intrested in another woman, this one is my best friend as well as lover and wife.  She even calls me up when she's out garage saleing to let me know she found one of my "toys".  She's picked up several guns and reloading gear for me, and usually at a better price than I could.  After 15 years of no drinkin' I got more money for my toys now. ;)  DP

The only thing I am ashamed of from my past.. Truely!

As bad as I felt the next day, I had to have had a good time!
We were like the "Pirates of the Hoochie River". After a couple of our raids though,
one raft full of folks trounced us pretty thoroughly ! they had artillery! one of those
sling shot contraptions that would throw a water balloon about a quarter mile. Those
boys had us flat trajectory and they could shoot! A buddy of mine thought he would
be smart and grabbed the cooler lid as a shield. Well a foam cooler lid is not a good
shield against a high velocity water balloon and Lee was knocked from the raft.
A fishing net works pretty well to stop them if you can hang on to it. After about ten minutes
of "Shelling" us, they ran out of balloons and the attack was on, We barely caught them
and after an intense "rat tail" towel battle, Lee snatched the air valve out of their raft
pretty much sinking them on the spot. Not before they stole our cooler of "Refreshments" though.
