I'm going to try to post a picture or two of the #1 Carriage that I am building for my Dominick Carpenter half scale Parrott- arriving soon. .  Many thanks to Robert of  Colorado for his patient answers to many questions.

That does look good. I like the wheels, they have that authentic offset that looks so much better than wheels without it.

Hi DynoMike, The trunnion straps and cap squares are made of 1/4" steel by Dominick for this particular cannon  and are inletted into 2" thick oak cheeks. They are vertically secured with 1/2" steel bolts through the entire cheek so I hope they'll be up to the task.  First few shots will tell I guess.  New pics to follow shortly. Regards, LS

Here's the deal.  The original style trunnion irons wrap around the front of the cheeks and the forward bolt goes through both top and bottom.  This arrangement causes the whole front of the cheek to resist the recoil, not just that part directly behind the trunnion.  By having a short iron as in the picture, the recoil will be taken up by the bolts and the wood immediately behind them and the top rear of the cheek wood directly behind the trunnion.  If you are firing live shot, you will get splits behind the bolts and the top piece will crack behind the trunnion.

It would be much better for the lower iron to wrap around the front of the cheek.

Thats what i was thinking G.. What do the roundels really do? I am sure they absorb shock but i am not exactly sure where or how. Everyone knows that Oak is hard, but it splits easy, that was my concern about the trunnion plates might split might not you are not only dealing w/ pressure you are also dealing w/ vibration, full plates arent that hard to build tourch & hammer and drill press built mine.Just my thoughts.

Thanks for your constructive (pun) comments guys. The pieces for wrap arounds are completed and I'll ask the neighbor to weld them on.  Any other suggestions gratefully accepted, I'd rather do it right the first time.

You will be happy you did this.  The end result will reflect every hour of effort you put into it.  It looks like it is coming along nicely.

Bolts in a gun carriage almost never directly bear the forces of recoil, they are there to tightly hold everything together. The wood carriage members, which are keyed and tightly fitted together carry the recoil load which is transmitted to them by trunnion sockets, rondelles and other metal parts.

Rondelles in a Civil War field piece are of two types, the rear rondelles have projections on each side which are mortised, both into the cheek pieces and into the trail, and they alone transmit the force of recoil from the cheeks into the trail. The front two pair of rondelles are made with flat sides and act as spacers only and do not carry any recoil load.

Hardware has all been updated/fabricated.  The guys at the machine shop want to see it and try a few rounds when it's together.  Dom got my barrel finished and delivered , #2010-1, he says it's the last half scale for the time being.  Just barely squeaked in under the wire on that one.  More pics to follow shortly.

That's a mighty fine looking elevator you've got there. Congrats on squeaking in under the wire and getting one of Dom's barrels.

It ain't fair I tell ya. She even sees me looking at this forum she just giggles.

Someone help me :'(

Madame Ali-Braco ("The woman-cannon"). This powerful woman worked in the circus world since 1875. She was an expert in acrobatics, but the most of her famous stunts was demonstrations of her strength with a cannon, which was placed on her shoulders. In the other action, she hung upside down leaning on a trapezium by her legs and lifting a heavy cannon held by the teeth (without using the hands).

Maybe it was a wooden barrel.

Cat Whisperer,

If that is your wife smiling next to your sidebyside cannon... don't ever leave her. Me on the other hand. I can't even get my lady friend to give me an honest opinion on which cannon looks better than the other. So I think I'm going to have to go with dan610324 advice if I'm going to be committed to my cannoneering. At least I'm not married yet if I need to choose one over the other.
