Geneology websites ?
« on: January 17, 2010, 03:27:14 PM »
Just curious if anyone here uses any of these websites for information and which sites are best to use. I want to look for my family history without spending a bunch of money for little results. Thanks for any help.

There are several good ones out there.  One of the best is usgenweb.org.  It is always good advise to consider anything posted by someone else suspect until you can verify it however.  Even original records like the census need to be verified if possible.  My Dad was named John Merlin Williamson.  On the 1930 census, he is listed as a female named Myrtice.   Just sayin............ :D

Ancestry.com has the most original information, but it is a pay site.  If you don't have a genealogy library near by, it's most likely a good investment..

Regarding the above post and Ancestry.com,
You can access Ancestry's web site/records by utilizing your public library and their computers.  All you need is a library card and it's free, if you don't count your taxpayer dollars.

I would be hesitant to submit any info. though to them or other outfits which they own.  My experience has been that they take this info. and then basicly sell it to other researchers.

www.familysearch.com  is another free website.  Again verify the data.

A website that I have been frequenting lately is www.findagrave.com
It is not a genealogy website, but it is a collection or database of cemeteries that have been indexed by volunteers.  A memorial page is created for each individual that has been indexed.  Some of the memorials have copies of the obituaries if a volunteer entered or had that information available.  It also contains many photos of headstones and you can also request a photo of a headstone and a volunteer that lives near the cemetery will receive an email of your request.  I had requested photos of 3 headstones, 2 were completed within 2 days, the third one is still pending.

Headstones can give clues about genealogy, but they are not a primary source.
