Am I correct?
« on: January 17, 2010, 06:47:13 PM »
The low end Savage would be the Stevens, well not a Savage but almost. Then it would be the model 11. Is this correct. Thanks, Don

I think you are pretty close. The Stevens 200 is a pre-Accutrigger 10,11,110,or111.
I think that's correct.
GOOD LUCK and GOOD SHOOTING!!!
IF YOU'RE GONNA GET OLD,YOU BETTER BE TOUGH!! GETTIN' OLD AIN'T FOR SISSIES!!!

not that the savages have many frills but the model 200 is a no-frills, plain-jane savage without the accu-trigger.

I knew it doesn't have the accua-trigger. I have a Marlin with the Savage like trigger. Being old and set in my ways, I am not sure if I like the little arm you have to take up before you feel the trigger. Don

I would not agree with thinking the model 11 or 111   Series as being one up from the Stevens . It would be the package guns sold with a scope and sling and without the accura trigger .
Then comes the wood 11 series Then the Hunter series , as the stock and finish from blue to Stainles but the rifle as a metal part or action is the same . Overall I think your getting the same gun then , just paying more for the finish from blue to stainless steel and from the plain wood stock to the accrustock.

I'm looking at a model 11 fycxp3 in .223 at Bass Pro for $400.00 --package deal with 3-9 x40 scope. Was thinking about getting a handy rifle in .223---wanting to get into calling coyotes, and think that a .223 would be good enough for the ranges around me that I'll be shooting. (probably not exceding 200yds)

Any opinions on this rifle compared to a handy rifle.

Cybin. I think on average the Savage would be more accurate than the Handi Rifle and of course you would have faster follow up shots. I have a small gunsmith shop and have sighted in lots of rifles and the Savages are pretty consistently accurate. I have shot a few NEF and H&R single shots that were not too accurate. Trigger adj. on the non accutrigger Savage's down to about 3 -3 1/2 lbs is not too bad. The NEF would be more complicated.
Out to 250+ yds I would think the .223 would have plenty of energy for coyotes. I just bought a Savage .223 about 2 weeks ago.

I have both - 3 Stevens 200's and 2 Handi frames with 6 barrels. I think it depends on personal likes, preferences and needs. If I am going big bear hunting, I want a repeater - 'nuff said about that. If I am shooting varmints I prefer a single shot rifle I believe in one well placed shot and it helps keep the barrel cooler.- I have converted 2 out of the 3 Stevens 200 into single shots. I have a tenancy to change what ever gun I am using. Some times just a bedding job, but some times a custom stock, different barrel and more than likely a modified or different trigger. Even Handi's I have changed (worked on). Bottom line - I can get Handi's to shoot well, I can get Stevens to shoot well. I think the Stevens are for the most part more accurate out of the box, if you do not want to do any thing at all. There are exceptions to every rule when it comes to guns. I have heard of Handis shooting very well right out of the box, with out changing a thing. I have also heard of having accuracy problems with a Stevens and then having to do accuracy work on it to get it to shoot well. If you do not mind tinkering with a gun ( I do) get the Handi rifle, chances are you will want a trigger job if nothing else. If you do not want to do any thing with the gun, get a Stevens, the trigger is not the best, but is serviceable. I think there is a better chance of getting a great shooting rifle out of the box. This is unless you need follow up shots for safety sake.

I picked up the Savage in .223--syn stock and 3 x 9 bushnell scope---rifle looks good (to me) and the trigger feels about right--not light--not heavy--but breaks crisp and clean--no creap notisable. Picked up some Remington 55 gr metal jackets bullets to try in it--I have some 40 gr and some 52 gr soft points to reload once I fire the remington ammo. Its a model 11, and doesn't have the accu trigger. Now just waiting on the weather to warm up so I can get out and try it out.

If it shoots as good as it looks--there is going to be some dead coyotes around this area of Missouri.

I have had one Handi rifle. I know everyone loves them and brags how accurate they are. This one wasn't. I spent a lot of time and money trying to make it shoot. Never got a good enough group at 50 yards to move out to 100 yards. Traded it for a Stevens 200. It shoots .6-.7 inch groups at 100 yards. The only modification I've done to it is replacing the music wire spring in the trigger with a lighter guage wire. Three pounds was the best I could get with the stock spring. Got it at 2 1/2 pounds with the lighter spring.

I looked at 2 handy rifles the night before I bought the savage .223. I have to admit that they didn't really interest me, partly becouse the wood on them was pretty poorly done, and wasn't very snug on the rifles. That could have been fixed I know--but when you buy new--it should be close to right. Also I'm more of a fan of syn stocks anymore, and the savage came as I like them to.  I did see a handy rifle in 7.62 x 39 at the last gun show I went to for a little over $200.00--nice wood and a scope. I came close to picking it up.

But I bought this .223 to get serious about killing coyotes around here. Last week coyotes killed my neighbors germann shepard and ate most of it. She let it out in the morning and it didn't come back--later that day another neighbor found it, and I have had coyotes come into my back yard and mark territory (just being a polite way to put it) at noon time when I was eating lunch. By the time I grabed my .30-30 it was gone. They are getting too bold--time to thin them out. A deer got hit by a car last week and right now all that is left is a few bones. The .30-30 would do the job--but it is a good excuse to get a new rifle , and my wife is easy to go along with that. As long as she gets a pistol once in awhile--she goes along with what ever new gun I want. She's been that way for the 35 years we have been  married.

sounds like you got a lotta targets packing up,, where you live..
gettum before they get one of the area kids. good luck.. slim
stevens or savage get my vote.i hate to recommend this so i won t.. but a gallon of
anti freeze might thin the pack..but you gotta find a way to make peace with your maker as its a horrible way to die..so that as a last resort..stick with shooting them. sorry

I know about the anti freeze--also can use some poisen and raw meat---but would rather use a gun--will be looking for a predator cassett tape shortly---may even move up to a electronic caller with a remote--but the ones I have seen at Cabela's and Bass Pro don't sound right--at least the cheaper models don't sound right. I don't really want to spend a couple of hundred on a top of the line caller. Only way I could justify spending that kind of money is if the pelts were selling for what they did about 25 years ago ($50 to $60)--I don't think that they are any where near that now. If they are worth anything.

Finally got out and shot my model 11 in .223. Shoots good--was on paper right out of the box at 100 yards, was shooting 1 1/2 inch groups with both remington and fiochi (not spelled right) ammo--55 gr MFJ. I didn't have the best rest to shoot from and it was a bit muddy for setting down and resting across my knees----wanting to do some reloading now and really see what it will do. For me, I don't need anything better than one inch groups at 100 yards, won't complain if it does shoot better than 1" groups, but not necessary. I'm thinking that you probably have about a 3 inch circle killing zone on a coyote, that ought to be enough.
