44 Mag loads?
« on: January 19, 2010, 12:11:06 PM »
Just got a 44 mag barrel froma member here and was wondering if anyone has tried high velocity/power loads in your gun and what results did you get.   I am specifically speaking about load such as Buffalo Bore, Corbon, Double tap, etc...

I will be using this gun (if I don't keep it myself  ;D) for my daughters for deer.  I will probably start her out with 44 special rounds and then move up to the higher loads.

Anyone?
If you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to serve as a horrible warning.

The early bird may get the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese!

I've dropped alot of deer with a 44 mag out of a rifle, had one for the last 20 years or so.  Started with an old 336 Marlin.  Most of mine have been taken with 240 XTP's since they came out, have used SWC's for a few.  Try one with with a wide, flat nose on it like the LBT style and you'll get good results.  Depending on how old it is, you may have to get a larger diameter bullet to shoot well.  Mine was made in 07 or 08 and shoots VERY good.  Have fun with it, they are "Handi". ;)  DP

Handi's:22Shot, 22LR, 2-22Mag, 22Hornet, 5-223, 2-357Max, 44 mag, 2-45LC, 7-30 Waters, 7mm-08, 280, 25-06, 30-30, 30-30AI, 444Marlin, 45-70, AND 2-38-55s, 158 Topper 22 Hornet/20ga. combo;  Levers-Marlins:Two 357's, 44 mag, 4-30-30s, RC-Glenfields 36G-30A & XLR, 3-35 Rem, M-375, 2-444P's, 444SS, 308 MX, 338Marlin MXLR, 38-55 CB, 45-70 GS, XS7 22-250 and 7mm08;  BLR's:7mm08, 358Win;  Rossi: 3-357mag, 44mag, 2-454 Casull; Winchesters: 7-30 Waters, 45Colt Trapper; Bolt actions, too many;  22's, way too many.  Who says it's an addiction?

I think someone said a while back that they used Corbons (maybe) and they punched through but didn't expand. I think you can do a search on 44 mag on here somehow and find some info. Maybe have to word it right ???

I think if I had a .44 rifle, I'd stay with factory ammo, which gets close to about as much as a .44 can be.  The difference between a .44 from a pistol, and the same round from a rifle, is tremendous.
Remember when the .44 Magnum came out, and it was all the rage because of it's power?  It was and is nothing compared to what it is launched from a closed-breech rifle.  If a Model 29 is good for deer to 100 yards, a shoulder held longgun in that caliber is all you'll ever need.

I think that Natchez has the Hornady loads on sale.
