Brown wins in Mass Senate race! Dems reeling!

Brown has essentially been declared the winner in the Mass senate race. Coakly has conceded to him. The dems 60 seat filibuster majority is over! Obama admin will now start throwing Coakley under the bus as a means to distance Obama from the failure. This is obama’s 3rd election loss since taking office.

Next, what will the dems do? Rush the health care bill of disaster to vote before his swearing in?

They will drag out his swearing in as long as they possibly can, they are all lawyers and will try to find any way they can to delay his swearing in as long as possible. I thought they might try to pull a franken again but it looks like they were caught flat-footed this time.

Harry Ried has already said that he will not take hsi seat until "all of the appropriate paperwork has been received."

Too much is being made of the 60-40 count though, all it will take is one more olympia snowe to make it interesting again. I would not be surprised to see a push to amend the constitution to a majority rule, not 60-40 to pass regulation.

Yep, the voters of PRMA have elected a Republican.  A real lesser of two evils guy he is too.  Just wait until he votes with the Democrats for gun registration. 

In any event Brown must stand for re-election in 2012.  The ultra-liberal Democrat machine in PRMA will dust off another Kennedy family member and the race will be on in 2012.   ;D

Don't know where Brown stands on gun control, but in his speach last night he supported a military second to none.  He supported tax cuts to stimulate the economy.  He supported fiscal responsibility.  He said he wanted to improve health care by incremental steps that we can afford, not a trillion dollar bill.  He sounded like a Reagan.

In 1917, senators adopted a rule (Rule 22), at the urging of President Woodrow Wilson, that allowed the Senate to end a debate with a two-thirds majority vote, a device known as "cloture." The new Senate rule was first put to the test in 1919, when the Senate invoked cloture to end a filibuster against the Treaty of Versailles. Even with the new cloture rule, filibusters remained an effective means to block legislation, since a two-thirds vote is difficult to obtain. Over the next five decades, the Senate occasionally tried to invoke cloture, but usually failed to gain the necessary two-thirds vote. Filibusters were particularly useful to Southern senators who sought to block civil rights legislation, including anti-lynching legislation, until cloture was invoked after a 57 day filibuster against the Civil Right Act of 1964. In 1975, the Senate reduced the number of votes required for cloture from two-thirds to three-fifths, or 60 of the current one hundred senators.

Back to me again.

The purpose of the upper House is to empower smaller states.  During the Constitutional debates, the majority believed in a concept of "tyranny of the majority".  Pure voting power could overwhelm the rights of individuals whose circumstances differ, for instance, by living in a predominantly rural State.

The purpose of the filibuster is similar.  Think of it this way: the majority of Americans live in cities, have never been to the country, owned country property, operated a farm, etc.  Why shouldn't those that do have a voice in Congress?  Without such things as the Electoral College, the Filibuster, and the Senate, they won't.

Or the Independents can enter someone & WIN if this guy doesn't perform, which would not surprise me because I don't have any confidence in ANY Northeastern polititian being a Conservative. To say a third party person could not win doen't make sense in view of the fact that 6 months ago no one believed that a Republican could capture this seat & also considering there are so many Independants in the voting populace now. But the lessor of 2 evil deal here is a real head scratcher here, there was no good 3rd party person to vote for & no real Conservative is for Gov. Health Care, so the only choice was Brown until the next election. The Dem is a true idiot & a trainwreck.
