RCBS 300 SWCGC and the model 83
« on: January 20, 2010, 05:38:54 AM »
The RCBS 300 SWCGC seems to be a popular bullet in the 454.
So I have one on order. Are there proven combinations I need to try?
Powder, load, alloy ???
What sizing dia. to start with as the FA are pretty tight in the chambers?

 David,
I shoot the 300grRcbs bullet quite a bit.
You have to size it .451''. So it will chamber in the M83.
I cast mine with WW  w/2% tin. Alliant 2400  21-23grs for a powder charge. This usually gives me 1250-1300fps. Which is plenty for deer. If I push it faster I would heat treat and go to  W296/H110.

any load in a manual for a 300 grain jacketed bullet will work. that bullet is probably my favorite 45 colt and 454 bullet. It shoots good at light levels and hot levels and flys well at long range. I will go as far as to say if your 45 wont shoot that bullet accurately it probably wont shoot accurately period.

Hi Lloyd,
I bought the mould because you praised it a lot.
What alloy are you using?

I'll try the "2400" powder. i am going to size .452 first as my cylinder accepts that size.
Anybody tried the vith N110 ? I think it's close to "2400"

David,

I’ve shot several different bullets, both cast and jacketed with 22.0 – 22.5gr A2400 (Little Dandy Rotor #26).  Included were 250gr Horn XTP JHP, RCBS SAA 270gr, 300gr RCBS SWCGC, 300gr Horn XTP Mag Jhp, 335gr Lyman 452651 FPGC Dual Crimp, and 340gr SST Cast TC plain base.  The 300gr RCBS SWCGC was sized .454 – these are from Montana Bullet Works and are listed as 22 BHN.  I did not chronograph, but all of those loads shot very well from my gun.  This load (22gr+- A2400) seems to work very well no matter what bullet you use.`

I’ve experimented a little with VV N110.  As you stated, it’s burn rate appears very similar to A2400.  On the low side, the latest Speer Manual lists a load of 16.8gr under a 255 gr RCBS cast SWC for 914 fps in their .45 Colt 14,000 psi loads.

John Taffin lists 17.0gr VV N110 under JD Jones 340gr SSK at 1,200 fps in “Ruger Only” .45 Colt loads – he says it’s very accurate.  In my 6” FA83, using .454 cases and the same bullet, I  chronoed 17.5gr in . at 1,194 fps (ES 32fps) and 18.0gr at 1,224 fps (ES 23).

Using the 300gr Horn XTP Mag and 25.5gr VV N110, I got 1,506 fps (42 ES), 6” bbl.  Max for respective 300gr bullets  of 27.5gr in Speer and 27.1gr in Hornady’s manual   both right at 1550 +- in 7 ½” bbls.

In my gun, 24.5gr VV N110 under Horn 250gr XTPs is one of the most consistently accurate load I’ve ever found.  This is a 44 Mag level load and runs 1,350 – 1,400 fps..

If you are using a progressive loader, be careful w/VV N110 – I had some bridging problems in my Dillon Square Deal B.

I use the RCBS 300 swcgc sized to .452, casts about 315 with the alloy I use.  I use 2400 or #9, 22 grs. gets around 1350 in my 6" M83, very accurate.

I cast it out of ww/lino type 5050 and it gives a bhn of about 16-18 depending on the content of the wws and linotype. In the 454 my favorite powders are wc820 which is aa9, h4227, and 110/296. Ive got some wc297 to try and it my end up being the ideal powder for full power 454 loads. check back in the summer. With my bad back i dont get out in the cold much anymore.

Everybody thank you for the suggestions.
I have a lot  to try
powders: HS6, N110, H110, blue dot and a little left over  2400 powder.
The blue dot and 2400 are old cansisters from Hercules
bullets: LBT 325 lfn and RCBS swc 300
I have already cast the LFN in ww both aircooled and water dropped.
A taller front sight from Ken o'neill is in the mail so I can start the serious work
I'll keep you informed
