give me a 10mm glock, 44mag, lever gun, or a M1 and i could take care of many hogs. I have been on extermination hunts before.

Your a brave man.  I use a HK 30-06 with 5 round mag or a 30-06/12 ga combo gun with a  29-2 (44 mag) as backup, the 44 mag is backed up with a Glock 29 (10mm).  All weapons have 2 additional mag and and the 44 mag has 2 speed loaders.

I have been in the middle of 40-50 hogs at night by myself.  You can never have too much fire power...

Watched that movie just the other day.  I do remember that scene with the pigs running away from the chopper.

I find all this advice from the non land owner, and even non-resident somewhat amusing. I like the head shooting one, as one of the best. After the first shot is fired, it is much like a quail flush on four legs. Hogs, despite colorful myths are not hard animals to kill, but are smarter than a coyote, and tuffer than a deer. Their being dangerous is far more myth, than reality, as the tendancy to feed at night, points to AVOIDANCE, being their main concern.
BUT! Let us look at the reality of this.
Traps? They work fine for a LITTLE WHILE, and then the hogs start getting wise to them, and the younger hogs learn from the older one. They are not all that proficient.

Dogs? Just because you don't mind dogs on your property, doesn't mean your neighbors don't. Much of the DOG HUNTING around here is going away because the "city folk" have build houses in the country and call the police, and sign complaints if the dogs run on their place, while chasing a hog.
Also, many cities have annexed farm land into the city limits. In Texas you can still hunt SOME OF THIS LAND, BUT NOT ALL. Run a bunch of dogs thru a neighborhood and see how that works for ya. ;)

Advertising FREE HUNTING for Hunters? That's a good one. You gonna turn a stranger lose on your land in Texas? HELL NO! If he gets hurt running around on your land, he can SUE YOU. IF HE IS TRESPASSIN ON YOU LAND AND GETS HURT HE CAN SUE YOU. IF HE ACCIDENTLY SHOOTS SOMEONE "THEY CAN SUE YOU".

Killin the hogs for the NEEDY? Have you ever offered a hog to the needy, and had them tell you they would take it if YOU BUTCHERED IT, YOU PROCESSED IT, AND YOU DELIEVERED IT? I have.

Head shootin Hogs for the Sake of HUMANLY KILLING THEM? What do you do with the corpse pile? Bury them? RUN THAT PAST THE EPA WHEN THEY FIND OUT!  ;)

ROCKBILLY, THAT'S YOUR LAND. THIS IS AMERICA. THEY AREN'T IN YOUR SITUATION. THEY AREN'T IN YOUR AREA. AND YOU ARE DOING WHAT IS BEST FOR "YOU". GET "JUST ONE OF THEM" TO COME DISPOSE OF THE DEAD HOGS, THAT ARE CRITICIZING YOU FOR GUT SHOOTIN A PEST. THEY WON'T DO IT. ;) YOU CAN PICK ANY STATE IN THE UNION AND FIND PROBLEMS IN THE AREA OF HUNTING. DOWN HERE IN MY PART OF TEXAS, THE PAY TO HUNT FOLKS ARE A PAIN IN THE ASS. THEIR USUALLY CITY BOYS, THAT CAN'T READ A MAP, SHUT A GATE, OR READ NO HUNTING SIGN. THEY BRING THE "BIG HOG MEDICINE" CANNONS TO PROTECT THEMSELVES FROM THOSE "DANGEROUS HOG CHARGES" AND THE WHOLE COUNTRYSIDE IS APT TO GET A BULLET THRU THE KITCHEN WINDOW.
AND THE GUIDED HUNT RANCHES? YOU HAVE TO GUIDE THE MORONS TO KEEP THEM KILLING SOMEONE, OR EACH OTHER ACCIDENTLY.
IT AIN'T ALL WHAT SOME OF YOU THINK IT IS. THE GOVERNMENT ALSO MONITORS THE LANDOWNERS, AND THEIR ACTIONS, AND SOME OF YOU GUYS DON'T KNOW WHAT YOUR TALKIN ABOUT. IT MAY WORK FOR YOU, OR IN YOUR MIND, BUT IT MAY NOT FOR OTHERS.

As always, my friend Dee speaks with wisdom.  Lot's of people trap around here, but it's a lot of work.  You need to move the traps often and over a large area (2500 acres +).  I've been on dog hunts.  We chased one dog for a couple of miles, crossing three fences in the process.  We were on a large ranch, but when we finally got to the dog and the hog, I asked my buddy (the dog's owner) who's place we were on.  He said he had no idea and we better get out of there pretty quick.  And as far as who hunts on who's land, well that's all about relationship.  I've recently lost one place (I don't feel it was any fault of mine) and am soon to gain another.  These are people that trust me and I respect their land.  That's how it works the best.  I get to shoot a lot of hogs, and they don't have to mess with anything.  If someone wants some meat, I'll bring it to them (gutted at the least and quartered at the most).  But most of the hogs I kill feed the vultures.  Do what you can to get rid of as many as you can.  If people are willing to pay to hunt them, then make a little money off of them, but you should also have a couple of people you trust to come out and hunt for free (they'll kill more than the pay hunters).

Dee,
I am at a place in life where income is asured and I have enough.  When I go down to Texas with my brother in law he has about 60 acres he bought just for hunting with a neighbor on a larger place hired to run his feeders.  I really like to cook better than I do to hunt.  The reason I go hunting is to keep my brother in law happy, otherwise I hunt, fish, and trap at Safeway.  Although I generally go as camp cook, so far I have dropped the most hogs.  We not only butcher but I get a kick out of making sausage and donating that to a food bank up here in Az.  I consider myself lucky that I am not in the position of hogs as pests and realise that how you take out such a pest is subject to situational ethics.  (Shoot a cat in an uban setting, get arrested-shoot a cat in the middle of a 1500 acre rice field and the warden thanks you for saveing pheasant)  At a last note I agree hogs are not armor plated my 6 went down to a .357 mag winchester trapper.  I am just fool enough tht I am working on a 18"45-70 to take down later this year

There is a man in Burlington Texas that takes fresh meat of any kind that he processes and feeds families that arer having a hard time making ends meet. It is a non profit organization.

http://www.p-o-r-k-i-e-s.org/

You can contact him and he will come to you to get it or meet you to pick it up. He also takes donations of material for processing.

Now if you wanna leave it on the ground the worms and buzzards gotta eat too, but this is an out if you have a mind to help out someone else.

Your points are well taken sir. It is a fine thing to have a noble mind, even when it makes little sense given the situation one has, vs another. I have found in my 60 years, that some folks think they know what's best for folks they know nothing about, and situations they know nothing about. Around here we call them nosey politicians, but some not so politically inclined, seem to want to point the finger at folks, not realizing that there are three pointed right back at themselves. I believe that is your point, as well as mine. I don't judge a man for what he does on his own property in regards to such matters as this. Hell, I'll help him if he needs it.
Right now rockbilly is in the fight of his life with cancer, and I suspect gives not a damn what these folks think. He is doin the best that he can with what he has, and I'm on his side, win, lose, or draw.

Dee,  take a deap breath, relax.  A number of suggestions were offered, some of them proven to work.  They weren't offered to you, but to another poster.  As adults we can agree to disagree.  On your land do as you please, as we all do.  On these boards we should be able to discuss, and at times disagree with one another, but remain civil.  In American we can all express our opinions, and as adults control our emotions when someone criticizes or questions our actions.  And yes, many of us do know what we are talking about, because we have been doing it for some time, and in Texas.

I can understand from your post (ALL CAPS part), that at least a part of your shouting was directed at me.  You can easily send me a PM and we can discuss this further if you wish. Other wise re-read what was suggested so you can respond accurately, not incorrectly.

I cap a lot markc. It's a habit. Good bad, who knows. I just do it. Take a deep breath? Why? My breathing is just fine. You say that on these board we sometimes disagree. That is true. You criticized, and condemned rockbilly, for gut shootin hogs, stating that what he was doing, was inhumane, unethical, and lazy, but you take exception to my statements although I never mentioned your name.
You take the deep breath. You got, what you gave.
rockbilly is 70 years old, and in bad health. He's doin the best he can, and you really don't know what your talkin about. You just think you do.
I too, live in Texas. Have for 60 years. I too have done the hog huntin thing. Probably a lot longer than you. What is going on in your part of the world is not necessarily what is going on in rockbilly's or mine. Your ethics are just that. YOURS!
So chill out. Be able to take it, if your gonna give it. You say he's inhuman, lazy, and unethical. I say you don't know what your talkin about, but think you do. Your land sells for 5 or 6 hundred an acre. Here, it's over $10,000.00 an acre. Land west of me 10 miles has gone for as much as $23,000.00 an acre.  Yours is fit for cattle and deer, and here, it's farm country. Being a land owner don't make you an expert. Just self righteous in your case.
I'll bet you've posioned mice. What a horrible death.
Oh, and by the way? Some of it WAS directed at you. Just like yours was directed right at rockbilly. Respect your elders, and his wisdom at handlin his problems the best he can.

The gut shot is what it is, a lazy way to rid yourself of a pest species without getting your hands dirty by hauling the dead hog someplace to dump it. I have no disagreement with mass killing the over population of feral hogs.  My disagreement is with what, in my opinion only, is an unethical and unsportsman way of doing it, by gut shooting it so it will die someplace else.

Again, on your property you can make the rules.  My rules only apply to the property that I own.  No hard feelings I hope, just expressing an opinion.

After what you said here of rockbilly's character, and then said "No hard feelings I hope" ::)
I don't think I missed my mark at all markc. No hard feeins I hope, just expressin MY OPINION. ;)

I just realized that I misread "Rally" and "Really."  Apparently, I haven't had enough coffee yet this morning.  I'll go remedy that.

A hog ralley has nothing to do with leather-clad bikers.  No offense to the bikers reading this.

Hogs sometimes "rally" when another starts squealin, and they come back to help him. It is one of the few times you can get hurt, if your the one with the squealin hog.

Dee, I've seen what you're talking about.  I've only been "charged" once but I've had them run at me (actually away from whatever was hurting them) several times, but that was because I was in the way.  I now make sure I'm not on a game trail when I start shooting.  But I've seen them come back a couple of times.  And no, you don't need spell check. . . I just can't read.
