Barrell Heating
« on: November 02, 2003, 04:39:28 AM »
O.K. Heres the deal. I went to the range yesterday with my Encore .308 24 in barrell. My first 5 shots (2 minutes time) I could cover with a quarter. I then proceded to shoot another 5 (2 minutes time) and you could cover that with a quarter too, IF YOU PUT A NICKLE ON EACH HIT It looked like a shotgun blast. I hope this was the effect of barrell heating and not me. After everything cooled down (including me) the group came back together. What expierences hav any of you had simular to this ? Whats the deal?  :D

I'm surprised the group didn't fall apart by the 3rd shot at that rate. What you experienced is normal. There wasn't enough time between shots to let the barrel cool. Then all you need is an ever so slight breeze to cool one side of the barrel, and it's all over the paper from that point on.
It sounds like the gun will shoot tight groups. If you wait about 2 to 3 minutes between shots, it may even do better.
