The plane may have been a buy but lets think about this.......... A Russian built plane maintained by the Chinese...........

This could be a costly investment.......... Your Cannon is looking good, now that you have it roughed out are you

going to use wood working lathe tools for the finer work?

This airplane (An 02) is my suggestion for the corprate mover for Seacaost . Lots of capacity short field capable .

The work is done as far as turning . I used tool bits to 'rough' out the details ,then needle files to finish .

I'm going to get some wax on it B4 cutting it out of the turning square .

Yes I can see it now as cannoneer's diligently aim their cannon's at the next shoot

they hear the drone of a radial engine in the distance as it gets closer they see

the hulking mass of a biplane...... it lines up at 1000 feet on the firing line crawling

along just above stall speed into a head wind...... as the plane reaches the mid point of

the line it banks it's wings towards the line of distant targets flame and smoke thunder

from above as a broadside of scale seacoast guns erupt in unison! the plane gathers speed

as it's gun crews reload for another pass............"Arrrrrh it's Air Pirates".............

Anyone who has seen the first 'In Laws' , w/Peter Faulk , and Allen Alda ......They had some Asian CIA guys flying the Lear . Down to the nutty dictator to be shot . And see the countries new flag !

Yes KB2 I can here the drone of that big radial coming it , low speed high drag style .

All the grace of a of a butterfly surrounds it as it delievers Brookes and Parrotts and what ever else you guys got up your sleeve . Western Hemisphere anyhow .

Either that or we take my boat to the keys ............

I bet we could get that thing on floats !!

They built a jillion of these things lots of parts , easy to work too !

In 93 I was in Macedonia and Bulgaria and every airport had those An 02's. They were either flyable, stripped or bent, sometimes all of the above.

I didn't see any cannons over there any where.

Good morning Dan

This 1690 gun is sweet ,I finished the tube today . Finished and waxed .

Tracy put on his glasses a hearing aid , and a 690,000x power pair goggle thingages .

He says he found a flaw , I told him yes , you did find a flaw but not on my cannon positive ....it is mostly between your ears .

I think that might have spooked him for a day or two ?

its actually nice

nice to hear that its finished

now it just need a pair of dolphines in the same high quality of your own design

yea dolfins ..? I'm going to make some ,but they will polly not be like the origanals .

I'm actualy making Lefts and Rights ...the Voc Emblem is another challange .

The mold will be tube only so each tube can have differant dolfins .

thats extremely challenging
they must match eachother to 100% except for the mirrored tails
its much easier to manage that on full scale dolphins

Gary, you would be smart to follow Dan's advice in blue above, and please remember all those encouraging words we uttered as you turned this very nice pattern. After all, you followed an authentic original this time, recreating each and every detail just as the drawing showed them and the finish is excellent and execution of the cascabel is flawless, so briefly mentioning a little bit of a void due to weak wood, can't really be considered a dig.

And, if you fail to see the logic and good will expressed in the paragraph above, remember this: We do Control the Means of Production and around here The Trains do Run on Time!

Yesterday Gary made excellent progress on the pattern for his bronze VOC gun. In fact, I believe it's finished except for waxing. Photos and captions follow.

After careful alignment on the Bridgeport Mill, and measuring the position for the trunnion hole, Gary drilled a 62mm hole through the tube pattern using a brad point drill and end mills.

Under center-line trunnions are apparent here. Several layers of masking tape prevent wood chip out.

Gary turns the trunnion piece to 62mm diameter. Light sanding allowed it to fit the hole well.

Like the setup in the Bridgeport, using the block, adjustable parallel and parallel clamp to hold the barrel. Nice work guys!

Good looking gun! Perhaps you'll bore the wooden one after the bronze one is made - then you'll just need to make a carriage for it, and you'll be able to join the ranks of Zulu!

Does it get a crest or anything else? Are you planning on adding the dolphins and the design work?

You need to tell us what you plan to do with that pattern. I doubt you will be making a sand mould since you would have a problem getting it out of the sand without destroying the cavities (offset trunnions.)

The trunnions could be tapered and put perpendicular to the parting line, yes?

It could, but then you would have only that one mould since the wax would be melted out to form the cavity. Gary will be making a rubber mould from his wooden pattern and then cast waxes in that, using the waxes to make the investments.

This extra step requires the pattern to be made with an extra shrinkage allowance for the wax casting step. That is, if you're going for specific finish dimensions.

Here is the dolfin I plan to use on the 1660 loverens gun .

It is as close as I can come to the origanal .

This dolfin is maybe 1 1/2" long it took four days to compleat .

That's a fine looking pattern for the lost-wax mold, Gary. I guess these dolphin critters could depart quite a bit in appearance from actual aquatic dophins on these ancient cannon? I think this design is outstanding, but it makes me wonder if maybe the original designer was plagued with large, voracious tomato worms in his garden. I love how those tangental, partial and reversing curls accent the tail swirl upon the aft of the beast! It looks alive!

Will you be painting those vibrant colors on the finished bronze?
