6mm AI owners

Just looking through old threads and noticed a few are out there. I am wondering who still has them and how they are doing? What kind of load development seems to be working best and what are the avg. group, velocity, and energy are. Does it seem to like low, middle or hot loads, I know loads vary by gun and componets. Just trying to get a feel for the round.  How many loads are you averaging from brass. I was thinking of doing a 6mm-06 AI on the 24" .243 bull but it seems like it may be to much to be efficent. I am now looking into the 6mmAI which really has my interest. What I would like to shoot would be the 87gr V-MAX, has anyone played with this? Also the facts/H&R state all .243 are 1in 10" but a few post seem to state other wise. I just want to be sure it is the 1 in 10" twist.

Another question. Would it be wise to get 6mm rem dies and have them reamed with the same reamer or just buy the AI die set. Would it even matter that much? I want them to be as uniform as can be. I also recall a post saying it should be reamed so that a standard cartridge just fits flush in the AI chamber? Am I remembering correctly?

I have a 6mmRemAI Ultra, have only shot it one day tho, 87gr Vmax over Rl19 for about 3300fps. I'm using Hornady custom dies, bought em from Mac a couple years ago, also have a Hornady hydraulic forming die so I don't really have to fire form. Mac also had a custom reamer made to the same specs as the dies, I traded the reamer to site sponsor Wayne York of Oregunsmithing for rechambering two of my rifles, the 243 Ultra and a 243 Optima Elite, both seem to shoot real well, but I need another range day to refine the loads. I think a carbide reamer is required to ream dies, dunno if most smiths would have that to make matching dies or if they're even necessary.

Thanks for the info. I will be back state side hopfully in April. The project will begin as soon as I return. Out of curiosity where is Wanye Yorks shop located? Thinking of having it done by him and being in Idaho it my not be to far of a drive/vacation if there is something nearby I can tell the wife we will go see. If not done by him I have one other local source who is a gunsmith that has ofered to start teaching me some things in my spare time and with him over seeing my project it my be fun to do myself. I would like to visit Oregon also, so who knows.

I had a 26" barrel on my Savage with a 1-10" twist, shot 87 grain Vmaxes at 3500 fps, 95 grain SMKs at 3400 fps, and 105 grain Amaxes at about 3250 fps.

Accuracy was real good, I stuck with the 95's at 3400 fps, had several sub-moa groups at 1k, and the only group I shot at 1100 was sub-half moa.

It just got rebarelled with a Krieger, and I'll have it back at the end of the month.  It is 30" plus brake, with a 1-7" twist.  I'm hoping to get 3300 fps with 115 DTACS, which makes for a heck of a cartridge that stays supersonic past a mile.

Ok, the money for the project is set aside and waiting. I got to thinking may as well go custom on the stock also. What Im looking for is a pretty simple (I think) it needs to be rectangular so as to have a flat bottom. There will be minimal shaping involved. I guess this would be similar to a f-class stock? A wide flat fore end would be nice also, preferable wider than the buttstock. This is what I have in mind. Basically just cut the but form the fore end, do finnal fitting and finish. Please tell me if any of you foresee any problems. Other sugestions are welcome.

Dies on order! Just a tad over 2 weeks until I'm back stateside. I am very excited as is the wife, 1yr is a long time. Going to try and track down a local smith to see about the rechamber before I purchase one, the other option is to send it to Wayne York but am unsure of wait time etc... for services. Oh well one step at a time, right? (some may disagree) ;) Next step/thought process. I had been wanting to do a heavy varmit type setup with heavy stock, but I already have the 25-06 Ultra. My wife picked me up a nice fixed 4x scope w/fine cross hair diamond reticle as a random gift, so why not put it to use right? Or, how about a BC set striped and hand oiled? And the synthetics Tim put on his 260 got me thinking along those lines except thinking of going with the survivor butt and conventional forend. The BC stock set really has my intrest.

Also waiting to hear how that super light barrel ends up on Tims 260. I'm pondering the idea of using the 243 super light barrel with sights and quick detach rings for the little 4x on the BC stocks. Nah, 20" a little to short for me, just stick with the 24" ultra with the 4x. Or am I just thinking to much about this and annxious to get home? Off topic but am really wanting a 22 lever also.

not to throw a wrench in here but have you thought about the 6mmx284???? looks real good on paper!! you'll have a barrel buner no matter what might as well get all you can out of it.

IMO, the 284 case isn't Handi friendly due to the .500" case head, a 30-06 family case head size is the max the SB2 frame can handle at full pressure, even max loads in them can flex the frame components, been there done that too many times.  :-\
