Trigger swap T/C
« on: January 21, 2010, 03:10:41 PM »
Have a Renegade w/ set triggers and a New Englander w/o set triggers. Can they be swapped with each other. BTW they are LH. Shooting at our club and the NE just a little lighter to shoot over several hours, and a set trigger would be nice.

I don't think so.

You have both guns there and you gotta ask? Oh silly man,,take them out and try.

They have the same width, and the trigger lever will be in the same spot too actuate the trigger arm on the lock. Trouble is the inlet for the single trigger is for the entire trigger guard and trigger. You'll have to inlet the N.E. stock for the rear of the Ren trigger guard, or you can just leave it on top and drill a hole for the rear screw.
Another problem you might run into is in 98 they started to use a through stock tang bolt,,the front tang screw goes all the way through to either the single trigger houseing or the front of the double trigger style trigger guard. If one has the through stock bolt and the other doesn't well you'll need a double trigger guard with a proper hole..
In any event, you'll not know what you have until you take'm apart,,It's easy,,go for it, there are no springs that will go flying across the room or nuthin, just simple screws. ;)

p.s. you can see a threaded hole on the front of the trigger guard IF it's a through stock tang bolt,,if that's the case then the front tang bolt on top the gun is what holds the trigger guard in along with the 2 wood screws in the guard itself..

You are right necchi, silly man. Thought about that after I posted, but thought someone like you maybe had been there done that. You gave me some good things to look at and I thank you! When the honey-do list gets this wall paper stripping out of way I will take a closer look.

Will I took them out to try. No way on my rifles will I attempt that, totally different IMO. Next question is (of course) does anyone know of a after market set trigger for the New Englander?
Thanks

T/C will probably sell you the set triggers and the gaurd to match it. They will still custom make a Renegade will double triggers also.

Davis Company makes a replacement double trigger for T/C Hawkens and Renegades.  It takes about five minutes to switchout and works slick as a whistle.  They are about $40, but you can sell the original one on Ebay for $20 to $30.  It's called a Deerslayer trigger.

Let me clarify a little. What I am trying to find is a set trigger for the New Englander. They, as you all know come with a single trigger. I have looked at quite a few sites that carry replacement triggers, but none show a set trigger for the NE (either single set or double set). Has anyone made a conversion like this on a NE? A single set would be perfect because of the space in the trigger guard area. Thanks for all the replies.

OK I have a Renegade and a Renegade Hunter, the hunter has the same trigger as the New Englander,,Long story short I just pulled them triggers and tried to do the swap as you did last week.

And your right, that double trigger won't just "drop-in" the Hunter stock. But It will work with some inletting. You can get that double in the mortice by relieving some of the wood behind the rear trigger, just enough for the spring and spring screw.
If the New Englander has a through stock tang bolt, there is still enough room to drill an access hole in the trigger plate or file the existing one longer for the room you need.
The trigger guard will have to be inlet front and back also, but it's really not that tough to do. Doing that kind of custom work is going to be about your only option, there are no "aftermarket" drop-in triggers to fit that T/C prioritized single trigger hole.
It's a half inch wide, and all of L&R and Davis stock triggers are narrower. The only good news is they didn't change their own tooling that much to get it, it's just deeper in one spot and they didn't inlet for the double trigger guard.
So putting the double and it's guard on the NE is do-able.

necchi, thanks again for the extra look. When I have some time I may take another look and try to do the additional inletting. Looks like the only option available (if I want to persue a set trigger for the NE). May just have to find another rifle to buy! thanks for your help.

Most of these parts can be found on ebay.
