405 Winchester
« on: January 21, 2010, 05:56:28 PM »
For those interested, I stopped by Whittaker Guns today and they still have a 405 Wincherster Encore on their used rack.  Blue/ black synthetic stock with iron sights and a limbsaver recoil pad.  $499.  It is not on their online used listing.  Seems awful light to me for the caliber, perhaps why it is on the used rack.

Seems to me to be a totally useless cartridge, and that is the general concensus from the big bore dangerous game crowd also that I read in a write-up a while back.

My 45-70 does anything I want in to, and a lower price than the 405.  The 405 has so few options for reloading or factory stuff as well.

I do and more than one and I like the things. Lots of folks I know have them and like them. Lots of folks I know have 45-70's and like them..me too. The 405 is like me just a little different. At one time it was rated as the most powerful lever action cartridge and it will out power the grand old 45-70 by a bit. Not a lot of factory ammo availiable and more costly than 45-70 stuff..but I don't buy factory stuff anyway..haven't shot a factory round for over 30 years..nada problem. Shoot what ya like. The 405 is actually very versitile as it can shoot all the 41 cal pistol bullets and heavy weight rifle bullets as well. Everything I have taken with it has fallen on the ground just as fast as it would with a 45-70 or anything else in that class. If I were to need a dangerous game rifle I would certainly pick the 405 over the 45-70 as I believe the bullets are better, velocity is better and penetration would likely be better as well. I also have a 450-400 nitro a highly regarded DG round and it is only slightly faster than my 405 with the same weight bullet. If I had to pick a heavy rifle for american game it would be the 405..while I would take the 450-400 to Africa as a primary gun..the 405 would be along as as well.

YMMV

I own a 405 in an encore rifle barrel and I like it a lot...but I own a lot of other "useless" calibers like 25-35, 416 rigby, 9.3x74r, 222 Rem, 25-20, 300 Whisper etc.

I don't own one.  I have shot 4570s for years so I don't need a 405.  I know need is not always the decision maker.  I have nothing against it.  Just to close to what I already have.  Still it seemed awful light to me.

It shoots a 300 gr bullet at  2200 fps as a standard load.  I shoot it in an encore with walnut stocks and a peep sight.  Recoil is firm and sharp but not objectionable. It pokes a big hole through anything I shoot.

That is why I asked. I have a Win/Jap 1895TD and it is a very enjoyable gun and round to shoot. As stated before, it likes the .41 mag pistol projectiles, it likes cast and it likes the factory stuff although I don't. I guess I am getting to be a bit of a wimp. The lighter stuff is what I enjoy. Useless? By no means. It has its place. Do I need it? Oh, heck no. I just want it and like it.

I guess it's time for the true wimps to check in.

I got the .405 for the Encore so I could shoot pyrodex or BP with the cast bullet.
I think 412263.
Can't remember the exact charge, but a full case of RS will get your attention, but I can still walk and write reasonably well after blasting away 20 shots.
Probably kill anything in North America as well.

Now all I shoot is paper, but if I get a chance to go after hogs, I think this is the one I'll take.
