460 S&W
« on: January 22, 2010, 10:55:09 AM »
I been thinking about getting a barrel in this caliber, and was wondering what those that have it think of its preformance on deer and black bear size critters.I also have about 100 heavy 45 colt loads and was thinking that they could be put to use with this barrel as I dont have the ruger any more. What kind of accuracy could I expect with the colt loads?
XLI the one to go with.

I've never used mine on bear or deer but it works well on horses.

I don't have the Encore 460, but in my Smith 460 I have poor accuracy with 45LC ammo.  Not only is the point of impact about 6" lower, the groups open up a bunch.  My guess is it is due to the long jump to the rifling, due to the 460 chamber.

I've found for low recoil practice, I'm better off loading 460 rounds with Trail Boss.

I was wondering about the long chambers. My thinking was I could use 3 different rounds in it and i'm already set up for 1 of the calibers.

Yes, you do have a choice of 3 different cartridges but I don't see a big advantage in that.  Some report good accuracy with 45 Cold loads in 460 S&W Encores but the point of impact is definitely going to differ between cartridges so if you wanted to do things right you would have to sight in every time you changed loads.  I think you're better off just using the brass meant for it and then working up a light load if you must.  I just have one load and that's a full house one.
