Haiti relief getting out of hand?
« on: January 23, 2010, 01:21:13 AM »
It sure seems like a lot of money and effort is going into Haiti. I realize there's an acute need for medical care, and it is good when people show up to do good works like that. And there is good in providing temporary shelter and food during the crisis. But my excess detector is signaling that a lot of this money is going to waste. What do you think? Is the UN and US relief enough, in addition to all of the charities that have been operating in Haiti for such a long time?

It seems that charity money for Haiti is a significant industry in itself and supports literally thousands of non-profits in the US alone.

There's lotsa profit in non profit. I agree that the people of Haiti are in a world of hurt right now, but I'd be willing to bet there's a whole bunch of peole making a whole bunch of money on the Haitian situation.

I do not wish to sound callous. Case in point you can not help someone who wont help themselves. Being an extremely poor nation is all the more reason why they should be self sufficient and possess skills for  survival in hard times. Throwing money at the problem is what got them where they are today. No one can anticipate a natural disaster. But years of living with bare essentials should have taught them to be efficient in the aftermath. Instead they have been doing nothing but putting a hand out for sustenance for generations.

No matter where the location. Giving a government handout only helps the ones handing it out. Their pockets get padded. And those receiving learn to beg instead of sustaining themselves. No matter how poor there is food, water and shelter in every inhabitable place. If not it wouldn't be inhabitable.

there have been ongoing efforts in that nation and many others to teach the people. but a disaster turns the clock back. so it will take longer to get them on their feet. charity is a benefit to the giver and the reciever
every day is a gift. use it well

RB1235, you are right on.

The ultimate result of all this help is that it will exacerbate the situation for the long run.  That's not me being cold--it's just the way it is.

Did you see where they took a planeload to Chicago? I'll bet they wanted to go back.

I don't think so, once a Hatian gets to the promast land (US) they never want to go back.

Haiti reminds me of a giant ant colony, everything in reach has been consumed and nothing is left.  That half of the island has been totally deforested, even the brush has been removed for cooking fires.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.
