I am seeing more and more .35 Whelens being brought up to Alaska to use for everything from Caribou to Brown Bears.  When I ask the hunters about their Whelens, they laugh and call it the "Old man's magnum").  I have two, a Mauser action (the wife commendeered this one) and an H&R.  Both have taken several Caribou, Moose, Black Bear, and one Grizzly with the Mauser.

As for loading, I like the 225 gr Nosler Partition, and use it for everything.

I also download with 180 gr pistol bullets and use them to train kids.

The "old man's magnum"?    That's a good one.  :)

The concept of using 180gr pistol bullets brought a smile - nothing like a "big gun" in a little kid's hands to make them "10ft tall and bulletproof"! Load that rifle with those little puffcake loads. Guide them in shooting and that smile becomes a grin that lasts for days! Good show - Sourdough!!

The "old man's magnum"?    That's a good one.  :)

Gunsmith that rebarrels my rifles has been trying to talk me into a 35 Whelan and  I've been happy with my present calibers that I use for deer/elk.  Week or so 35 Whelan barrel/action can up for sale on one of the site I post on action was model 700 pretty well tricked out chamber was cut by well known LR gunsmsith.

I'd talk to my gunsmith as the barrel/action needed to be blued also needs a stock and not wanting to hurt his feeling he told me buy it he knew the owner of the barrel/action and he called talked to him so should have it maybe next week.

The action was a display model for manufactor of Receiver Truing Tooling so custom bottom metal was added along with 3 position saftey oversized recoil lug alot of little things done to that action.  I was more interested in the action to tell the true but one never knows.

Yup ,oversimplification is not good but the 35 Whelen makes a good cornerstone to build on.

Ya know, I could give up all but one rifle and "get by" ,BUT if I only had one rifle, regardless of whether it was "good for everything" or "good for nothing" I would never be "content". Lord knows that God wants us to be happy in our circumstance. I've been layed up a couple weeks now with the gout. Have not been up to gettin out or even to setting up to the loading bench. HOWEVER, I am surrounded by my guns and the assorted paraphanalia that goes with them (my "gun room" is our dining room so generously allowed by my loving wife as we never eat in the dining room, anyway) therefore, my level of contentment is highly elevated. One gun would never do.

I think it would be as good as the .30-06 but harder to find ammo for.

Whelen can handle the "all around" duties.  My experience is limited to Missouri and Wyoming.  So far my M700 Classic 35 Whelen has taken multiple whitetail, pronghorn, and elk.  And one mountain lion that came to my cow call during elk season in 1998. ;D

It is easy to handload for.  In factory ammo the Federal 225 gr. Trophy Bonded Bearclaw is a great all-purpose load.  Remington 200 gr. SP take deer and antelope neatly.  Any 250 gr. factory ammo will handle elk easily.

I will be shooting 250 gr. Speer and Hornady bullets in handloads until my supply runs out.  After that I will probably settle on 225 gr. Nosler PT for everything.

Great cartridge!

Ha lgm270 I dont know where you are getting your loading data but a 35 Whelen with a 220 gr bullet only goes 23 to 2500 with a compressed max load where as a 338-06 is about 24 to 2600 fps with a 225 gr bullet this is out of my Speer #13 manual. Hornady balistics chart has a 338-06 200 gr bullet, 2753fps 1.9+ at 100yds 0 at 200 and -8.1@300 -23.7@400 and a wind drift of 3"@10mph @200yds.  :o

Nim

Double tapp ammo claims 2700 for 225 Grain Accubond.  Other individuals make similar claims.

http://www.doubletapammo.com/php/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=21_46&products_id=192

Federal Trophy Bonded Bear Claw 225 gr. at 2,600.

Nosler custom premium ammo reports 2,800 with 225 Grain

http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/?productNumber=332070

The main difference, IMHO, stems from different maximum pressures established for the two cartridges.

Both the 35 Whelen and the 338-06 are based upon the .30-06 parent cartridge case.  The original 30-06 max pressure (of 50,000 C.U.P.) was essentially established for the 1903 Springfield and remained at that level until new SAAMI specs for the 30-06 were established at 60,000 P.S.I.  By contrast, when the 270 Win was introduced, it’s max pressure was established at 65,000 P.S.I.

The SAAMI Maximum Average Pressure for the .35 Whelen is 52,000 C.U.P. reflecting its close wildcat origin to the 30-06 and the fact that many of the 35 Whelen rifles were originally build on sporterized 1903 Springfields.  When Remington commercialized the 35 Whelen they kept the lower pressure limits and ammunition and reloading manuals reflect this, with the 35 Whelen typically loaded to a max pressure of 52,000 C.U.P often not exceeding 55,000 P.S.I. you see in most reloading manuals.

As a wildcat the 338-06 originally had no established SAAMI Maximum Average Pressure for the .338-06, but when commercialized by A-Square I believe they set it at 65,000 P.S.I.

Thus with the higher pressures used in the 338-06 you see the higher velocities.  There is no reason why a 35 Whelen in a modern action could not be loaded to pressures equal to the 338-06, and with comparable weight bullets in a bigger bore, the 35 Whelen ballistics (if so loaded) would exceed the 338-06.

I have owned several.  Ammo is common as 30-06 anywhere.  Same performance as a 30-06 just with heavier projectiles.  If you reload the Nosler most accurate load you get out of their book was 1/2 inch at 100yds out of my custom remington.  It is a ballistic tip 225grn doing about 2300fps.  I tried IMR 4064 with it doing about 2700fps but it also added a lot of recoil and wasn't accurate.  Just because you can make something go faster doesn't make it accurate as far as rifles are concerned.  The bang flop thing never happened with the 20 or so whitetails and bears I shot with it.  They died within 50yds and had a large blood trail leading up to them so it was still mission accomplished.  This was with remington 200grn factory also.  The remington 250grn factory grouped as good as my hand loads but I never shot anything with it.  My uncle killed a big Kudu in Africa with the 200grn factory load.  He said the animal knew it was hit but went about 50-60yds and fell over.  Get the book Pet Loads if you want to reload and follow the accurate loads in there.  I now traded my 35 whelen in for a T/C custom shop 460 smith and wesson with a 24" barrel.  SSK makes them and has chronographed the factory Hornady 200grn ammo which is advertised at 2200 from an 8 inch barrel at close to 3,000fps with a 24" barrel.  HSM advertises a 300grn bullet 2,000 from a pistol with there’s so I'm thinking it should be going close to 2750-2800fps.  Another option if you need or want something close in performance.

I have owned a 35 Whelen since I made one on a 1903 MK I, Springfield in 1966.  Had the barrel rebored to 35 caliber so it is a 1:10 twist.
Added stock and Lyman receiver sights and hunted with it for about 15 years before joining the military.  During that time it took 15 deer, 4 elk, and 2 bear.  Every shot was a "bang/flop" using Speer 250 gr spitzers.
I recently made a 338-06 out of another 1903 Springfield that I acquired.  Have not taken game with it yet, but I recently "upgraded" my 35 Whelen by turning the bolt, adding a Timney trigger, and mounting a Leupold 1.75X6 scope.   The 338-06 is outfitted the same way.  Is a tough decision to choose between the two!

My beloved 338-06 was built on a 03A1.  Something about the 2 just go together...  My Whelen is a M700.

I like the 338-06 A-Square here are my bullet lineup.

From left to right from the picture are:

Loaded: 300 grain round nose, Speer 275 grain semi-pointed

Bullets: 225 grain Nosler Accubond, 225 grain Nosler Partition, 225 grain Hornday Interlock, 225 grain Speer Boat Tail, 210 grain Nosler Partition, 180 grain Nosler Accubond

Loaded: 210 grain Nosler Partition, 200 grain Nosler/Winchester combined technology Ballistic Silver Tip, and 180 grain Nosler Accubond.

yooper77

The 35 Whelen is an excellent cartridges, but my Weatherby Mark V Ultra Lightweight (54 degree bolt lift) topped with Leupold standard base, Leupold low rings, and Leupold VX-III 3.5-10x40mm scope is perfect medicine for any north American animal.  338 caliber bullet selections are phenomenal.

I build my handloads with 30-06 Springfield brass and IMR-4320, IMR-4064 and IMR-4350 powders.  I recently pick up some Nosler Partition 250 grain bullets to add to my above list.

I love my 35 Whelen AI. It works well and is my go to hunting gun.

My back up rifle is a 30-06, but I love those 35 cal bullets too much to shoot the 06 much.

Thinking of simplifying my life and having a .35 Whelen made on a  Win M70 CRF action with a 23" barrel.

I would use this for mule deer, elk and possibly African plains game.  I see people getting 2,700 fps with the 225 Grain Barnes TSX and 2,800 with the 200 grain TSX. It strikes me that with those two bullet weights I could handle just about anything.  Very powerful but still as flat shooting as the 30-06/180 grain load.  Brass is easily made from .30-06 and it's a simple, reliable non-nonsense kind of rifle.   Instead of using a .270 for deer, a 338 for elk etc., I would just use the .35 Whelen for everything. Frankly, having one cal would simplify a lot of things for me, having reached that stage of life where I am more in tune with fewer rather than more things to store, load for and deal  with.

For fun, I can shoot .357 pistol bullets for plinkers and there are also good cast designs for this round.

There are many 35 cal shooters on here who have a lot of experience with this round and I would enjoy hearing your points of view.   This round strikes me as a practical, simple, reliable solution to any practical hunting  situation I will have.

be sure you get the barrel twisted fast enough for the heavier bullets...also why not the 9.3 x 62?

Well I just started shooting the Whelen almost forgot how much it cost to set up for another caliber.  2700fps plus is a  real number with 225gr bullets from the Whelen still have more powders to play with and more than likely use either a 225gr Accubond or 225gr TSX.

In truth hard for me seeing using that rifle to take a deer with maybe if they wore armour plating so for me the Whelen be used for elk only.

I have a M70 Classic in 35 Whelen, vintage 1988. I have taken 17 WT bucks and a 250 lb Black bear. The 35 Whelen is a very solid game killer with excellent accuracy beyond 300 yds.

I have been sshooting 35 Whelens for 42 years. I have shot everything from 200 grain bullets to 275 grainers. My favorite is the 250 grain Speer at just over 2500 fps. The same would be said for the Hornady's, Nosler's, Woodleigh's and such. Zero them at 200 yards and you can make killing hits on game at 300 yards with a little practice. You will have around a 10" drop at that range. I do shoot many calibers from 280 Rem through 458 Lott, but if I had to shoot only one caliber for all of North America, it would be the Whelen. Most guys that own and use them on big game will same the same. It is usually shoot and holler fetch. There are a lot of good powders listed above but don't leave out R-15 and Varget.

Good shooting,
Dave

I am new here and darn glad to be here. :). That being said it is nice to see someone did some good research. As said the companies that put out reloading books have kept the SAAMI specs low for the 35 Whelen so with some work and a chrono and know what to look for as far as pressure signs the Ole 35 Whelen can do far more than what the reloading books tell you now from all the reading I have done.

This summer there was an article in the Handloader Mag that was talking about the 33 and 35 cal bore rifles as in 338 Mags and such and then the 35 Whelen and talked about shooting distances and how the SAAMI specs have changed over the years. But in the end he said in a nice way if you are looking for a 300 yard Deer/Elk/Moose rifle you would be hard pressed to have a better rifle than a 35 Whelen.

But I am very new to this so I am doing all of the reading I can find and I think I am going blind and will need glasses soon lol.

But my rifle was just finished and should be here in a couple of weeks. It is a Marlin XL-7 originally a .270 win but now sports a Shaw Mag contour barrel in 35 Whelen with a 1-14 twist 24 inches long. With a Boyd's Thumb Hole stock in pepper that has had pillars installed and the action bedded to the stock. The action was squared and the lugs lapped as well as the feed ramp smoothed. Here is a picture.

Here is a picture.

52,000 CUP (by his formula) on the Whelen would be equal to about 60,930psi with a regression error of 92.7%.

I like the looks of your rifles, very classy.  I have a Model 700 classic in a 35 Whelen, haven't loaded for it yet.  And last year had a 338-06AI built on a model 700 remington.  It wears a Leupold VX-II 2-7 and shoots 200 gr Hornady consistently into a 1/2".  It is a pleasure to shoot and kills game with extreme authority.

Barstooler I am sorry but I can not read the load info?

Nice group by the way. :). I think people are missing out on what the .358 Winchester and .35 Whelen are capable of. Due to the bad load info in our modern reloading books.
