welding on of barrel extensions
« on: January 23, 2010, 01:50:09 PM »
I am too cheap to go through custom ordering to get a 44 mag barrel for my contender carbine. So I found a cheap 14" 44 mag barrel and figured I would weld an extension on that I turned on my lathe to bring the length to 17" or 18" (just to be safely above 16").

I am assuming it needs to be welded not soldered or brazed to be legally "permanent". Is that possibly correct?

Or were would be a good place to check?

You'd have to talk to the ATF to confirm, but I believe a blind pin, solder that won't melt below 1100 degrees or welding would all be considered "permanent".  Again, you'd want to double check with the ATF to confirm what constitutes "permanent" with them.

looks like they specify a certain amount of weld as well. I didn't see anything on atf's site about blind pins but that would be great.  You were right about the 1100 degrees, so rather than heating the whole barrel end that hot  I think 4 spot welds with a tig welder sounds better

This is what I found:

"A muzzle device, such as a muzzle brake or barrel extension, which is attached to a barrel by means of welding or high temperature silver solder having a melting point of at least 1,100 degrees Fahrenheit, is considered to be part of the barrel for purposes of measurement.
A seam weld extending at least one-half the circumference of the barrel or four equidistant tack welds around the circumference of the barrel are adequate for this purpose."

Guess thats what  I gotta do. If I screw it up I guess cut it back, recrown and have a 12" pistol barrel I dont need
