I have had poor performance on deer with ballistic tips so I don't use them.  I do, however, use 168 grain VLDs and those are deadly on deer.  I would think the BTs would work fine if not pushed too fast.  I know many that have had good results with BTs.

I use ballistic tips in both my 308 and 300 win mag.  Never had a deer go more than 20 yards after being shot with them and I have put down a lot of deer.

I consider the 165 gr. Ballistic Tip to be as good a deer bullet from the 308 as can be had. The bullet will handle any reasonable shot on deer though it may be a bit destructive if you hit a shoulder it will most likely exit the other side. This bullet beats the Corelokt of the same weight in all areas except price.

I aim behind the shoulder.  Never tried to put one through the shoulder but I would expect the 165 to go through without a problem.

I've never had a bullet fail yet. Whether it is a sierra, hornady, rimington, or anything else. If you hit a deer in the chest, they won't go far. I have killed several deer with my .25-06 encore using 85gr. ballistic silver tips. And they are pretty weeney compared to the 165gr. But they have never failed. Here is a pic. of the last doe I shot at 250 yards.

For an all round deer bullet in the 308 the 165 ballistic tip is a fine bullet. It actually shoots flatter at long range than the 150 gr which is also a good deer bullet. The last few years I have been using the 125 gr ballistic tip with 46 grs IMR 4895 for just a touch over 3000 fps in my rifle for 100 to 175 pound on the hoof average deer. BANG FLOP. Even at ranges as close as 50 yards the 125 bullet through the front shoulders will make it to the hide on the offside. The shoulders will be toast but I don't worry about that little bit of meat lost to me. Where I hunt in NC you can get all the doe permits you want. We de-bone what is left of the shoulders and cook it in a crock pot and feed it to the dogs and cats.

I agree with you on the 125g ballistic tip.  That is the bullet I use most in both the 300 and 308.  At close range it blows one hell of a hole through small deer and antelope but it gets the job done.  I try to chose my bullets so that they expend the most energy inside the animal I shoot rather than just poking a hole through them.  Put one through the chest and you don't find anything resembling lungs inside the chest.....

I use BT's on deer all of the time...243, 270 and 30cal.  I keep the velocity at or below 3000fps and never have a problem.
