30-30 to 30-40 krag
« on: January 23, 2010, 04:50:06 PM »
How difficult would it be to convert a 30-30 barrel to 30-40 Krag? and it it is difficult who would you recommend as a qualified gun smith. I really like the 30-40 and have an old Krag but would like to retire it and replace it with a single shot.

It's a simple rechamber. There are a few of them floating around here somewhere. I'd like to do the same thing but my 30-30 shoots too well to change anything. ;D

If your going to re-chamber to the Krag, do the Ackley improved Krag. Better performance with less c.u.p. pressures. I have two of them and have had for over 40 years its a great cartridge.

I'd take a look at the cost of 30-40Imp dies before you make that decision, die costs have nipped some of my rechambering ideas in the bud.  :-\

Just did a search...  E. Arthur Brown has them for $60 which is a good deal.  http://www.eabco.com/cgi-bin/shopper.exe?preadd=action&key=127-3040AI   -  I think they're Redding.

Cost of dies has kept me from changing a Remington Model 7 to 243 Ackley.  My gunsmith has the reamer.  Dies from Midwayusa are $143.00 !!!  Ouch!   (Just found some Redding dies for $75.  Better...)

Is it worth the extra cost?  I'm still trying to decide that also.

The other issue is: Reloading data -  I'm not seeing much on the net.

I can understand the attraction as I have a '98 Krag original Springfield rifle, but what are you hoping to gain? Extra powder capacity for....? If its heavier bullets just load them in 30-30 cases. A few hundred feet per second velocity wont be noticed by the game you bag. Remember, T.R. thought the 30-30 a fine small bore express in Africa.

The 30-40 Krag is nastalgic to me but then if you talk to anybody about being nastalgic in Wisconsin the only answer you will get is it ain't more nastalgic than a 30-30 ;D Kurt

Don't let the na sayers put you off the AI, yes dies do cost more but you will end up giving that gun to your kids and grand kids so a small price to pay.The 30/30 imp is a big improvment that is one cal that needs it and it works well on the 30/30 it will nip at the heels of the 30/40 or .303 and will even give the willy's to a .308 it's that good. I would not bother with a AI in a 06 case as I have found them not much better but say in a H&H or a 30/30 or .348 they are great.

The longer the neck and steeper the angle of the case the better AI cases work.  Also, a lot of AI load data ups the pressures, especially bolt actions.  Loaded to the same pressures most AI cases don't give you much. The 30/30 and 22 Hornet may be the two best candidates for improving.  Gains can be signifcant.
