Am I just paranoid?
« on: January 23, 2010, 06:11:24 PM »
The grocery store that I usually shop at recently started a program called pump perks. I walked in one day and there was a table set up by the door, the guy flagged me down and told me about the program-if you buy certain items certain items in the store, you get gasoline discounts at a local gas station. A very good discount actually- like 4 cents off per gallon if you buy a package of little sizzlers, that made me curious. To sign up for this program, you get a keychain barcode- after they scan your drivers license!

So then you get to the cash register you give the cashier your barcode (which has your address, height, weight, birthday, firearm certificate, motorcycle endorsement, whatever....to get your little gas discount, all without realizing that you just told big brother what you eat and how often you eat it. I have been watching the items that are flagged for pump perks, they are not health foods!

Anyone else seen this?

I've seen a similar program of a grocery store (in my case, Bi Lo) offering discounts in conjunction with Sunoco.  Any purchases earn you discounts on gas though, not specific items.  Also, for the Bi-Lo card there's no scanning of a drivers license - you just fill out a form (which I always fill out with absolutely bogus info).  I actually do that with all the grocery store discount cards for privacy concerns.  Ask them if they really need your driver's license or if it's optional.  I've got cards from Winn Dixie, Food Lion, Piggly Wiggly, Bi Lo, True Value (not a grocery store but they have a similar discount card program), and several others.  Haven't put my real name/address on one yet.  Heck most of those stores even have a card at the cash register.  Though it won't help for fuel discounts at the pump, just for saving the money you can ask to have them swipe the "store card".

Though to be honest, it's hard to stay private these days.  Relational databases today can make so many connections it ain't funny.  There's tons of stuff that is public record (which is a good thing, though it has drawbacks), and there are companies out there that specialize in taking public info about everyone and linking/analyzing it so that subscribers can find out anything they want about anyone.  Lexis Nexis is one such company. They typically market their database access to law enforcement, but since everything they source from is public record anyways they will sell to private entities as well.  They did a demo to our sheriff's department a few years ago and it was unreal the amount of data it can dig up.  It could produce graphical trees showing relationships (not blood, but personal) to all sorts of acquantances from varios time periods.  For example, they asked our sheriff to give them a name of a person he knew, but not too well.  They plugged both names into the system.  After some searching it reported that he and the other name were indeed linked - the sheriff's wife had shared an apartment with the woman nearly 30 years ago.  It then listed a current address for her, along with a picture of her and her current residence and what type of vehicle she drove.

It's pretty simple how they do it though.  For instance, as a county we publish property card information on our website.  Lists a property's attributes, including owner, sketches, and any photos we have of it.  We also list building permit info.  They are perfectly free to download and index that information.  Sex offender lists are also published by other agencies.  State contractor's licensing is done by the state. Other info by other agencies.  Just imagine a huge super computer scouring all that info and linking together every bit of it.  And from what I'm seeing, it's private companies that are doing most of that indexing and linking, not the government.  Heck selling the government's information back to the government in an organized and indexed form is the primary business of these companies.

You tell big brother what you eat, how much gas you buy, your clothes sizes, and a multitude of other things every time you use a credit card or debit card. Not to mention big brother watching what websites you visit, how much you heat your house, and what kind of cell phone you have and where you are when it is turned on...

One can only hope BB is too busy harassing grandmothers at airports to pay much attention to what you and I are doing in our everyday lives.

And yes, we have that pump perks program locally too. Most of the stuff they use for perks seem to be snacks and/or treats as far as I can tell. We don't buy that kind of stuff much, and besides I have lost my little card.

Two options, don't sign up for the perks, and if you do, lose or forget your card (and of course the third way - use cash for everything).

Always have a smile when in public, you are probably on camera  ;D

I'm not as much concerned with big brother as I am about the possibility of identity theft.

What if Bi-lo gets hacked and unknown to me, my personal information is stolen?

These cards are primarily designed as customer loyalty tools. But like any information about you, it can be abused. As me sage ol' grampappy uster say: It ain't paranoid if it's true.

I was jusr wondering if there was a connection between that gathering that kind of information and 'o's  war on obesity (hear about that one yet?) and social medicine. Check this out-our real enemy is fat, not islamic radicals.

While there's no proof that they're doing it at this time, there has always been concerns that private insurance companies would purchase the data from grocery stores.  Honestly though, it seems like a system that could just be too easily manipulated for those purposes.  Go in and buy your fresh fruit and veggies on the card and then come right back in and buy your butter, salt, and bacon with cash.  Right now there doesn't appear to be much point, but if the information collected had any consequences (such as higher insurance rates) I could see this type of thing becoming very common.

Heck even with legit shopping habits it'd be hard to realistically tie to a person definitively.  My Bi-Lo card for example I filled out with bogus information, but they give you multiple cards.  Since I was in college when I first got mine, I just gave one of the keychain ones to my roommate at the time and kept one.  From everything I can tell, he's still using that same card, as am I.  If it had been filled out with either of our correct information then they'd be getting a confused picture.  For a while in college because I was too lazy to fill the form out for one I just used a Win Dixie card that I had found in the parking lot one day.  No idea whose that was.

Overall based on what I've seen, most of the data harvested via private companies is primarily at risk if they get hacked and their database falls into the wrong hands.  99% of the data aggregation that occurs is done with information that is public record (aka - government information).  Still though, you have to wonder: just how well IS that information being protected by these private companies.  Google was just hacked by the Chinese government recently, and they are known to be one of the most technologically savy companies in the world.  How well do you think you local gym or grocery store protects THEIR stuff?

As an aside though, if you're really that interested about ONLINE privacy, then you might check out TOR (The Onion Router).  Google it.  Essentially what it does is forward your web traffic through a random number of proxies with encryption layered that gets removed at each hop.  No hop along the way knows how many layers of encryption have been "peeled" off before it got it, and it only knows the address of the last computer in the chain that sent it along.  The result is that your traffic becomes effectively untraceable on the internet.  FreeNet is another similar technology but it doesn't work with the normal world wide web.  With FreeNet you access a specific "FreeNet" portion of the internet.  Again, pretty much untraceable.  Only warning is, being untraceable means that you have to take the good with the bad.  FreeNet is a wonderful place to trade ideas and converse anonymously, but it's also a haven for tons of illegal material too.  The safety it affords you it affords criminals as well.
