It depends on the gun and what you use it for. I have several of the Uncle Mike's holsters from Michaels of Oregon. They are used when I am carrying on my quad. The nylon repels water and the snap stays shut. I don't worry about weather or losing my gun while driving. (Coat or jacket is usually over butt until needed.)
I have a lot of the Hunter brand holsters. They are leather and look a lot like some of the "western" holsters. You can use the leather band with snap to hold the gun in or you can add a thong to pull over your hammer. They slip onto a leather belt easily and can also be softened and oiled so they do not wear on your gun's finish like the nylon holsters do.
I have several different brands of shoulder and/or chest holsters. Leather and nylon. I use these when carrying a long barrelled revolver, scoped revolver, or revolver with custom sights that could snag on some of the other holsters.
I have a couple of the tooled western belts with holsters and shell loops also.
I like the traditional "sixgun" look, but sometimes functionality has to play a part too.
