Hot 45-90 Load
« on: January 25, 2010, 12:33:19 AM »
Hi all,

I have been looking for some time now for a hot 45-90 load data.  The reason here is not to push the limit but to see what the limit is.  I am told that the 45-90 will produce 100-200 fps faster then the 45-70.  Has anyone tried this, and if so what were you using?  I can't take PM's if you don't want to post.  Thanks

Ron

Fill'er up with FFg and seat a cast lead bullet!  Lot's of fun!

You might look on some of the powder manufacturer's web sights for load data.

I haven't had much luck when I'm looking around.  Any smokeless powder ideas?

So is it possible to get a 350 grain bullet to 2400 fps using smokeless powder even possible for this round?  I see 45-70 loads of 350 grain bullets at 2100 fps and a hybrid round based on the 45-90 case (2.21" case length compared to the regular 45-90 of 2.4") pushing 350 grains to 2200 fps, so in theory I should be able to push a 350 grain bullet to at least 2300 maybe 2400 fps, right?  and still stay under 40-45 CUP?  Please proof my logic here......  Thanks

Ron, the following is for a 458 Win Mag:

Quote
350 GR. SPR SP  Hodgdon  H4895  .458"  3.105"  77.0  2419  34,600 CUP  80.0C  2496  38,700 CUP

I don't know what you are attempting to shoot this in but I'd prefer not to be around when you do.

While there are some smokeless powders that allow this cartridge to be quite a thumper, the 45-90 is a still black powder round not a magnum.

Mr. Ford,

I have been reading up in the Handi Rifle forums here on Greybeard.  I have made several inquires into the 45-90 and was told it would hold the loads I am looking for (and then some).  I haven't bought anything yet.  I am just looking into the possibility of such a gun/load.  Thanks.
