So you are saying the Big Bang Theory is of equal standing and is just down to minute details?

Indeed it is.

My wife is 1/16 ojibwa.  If she applied for tribal status she would qualify for a 4 month deer season, spear fishing rights, gathering rights and be exempt from state taxes.

I'm technically 1/16th Cherokee myself - the absolute lowest amount that you can be and still apply for membership in the Cherokee Nation.  Still, though by mathematics I might qualify, I look white enough that I'm pretty sure they'd laugh me out of the place, and with good reason.  My grandfather on my mother's side at 1/4 still had some look of it left in him, but it was all gone by my generation.  ???

yeah atlaw, it kind of shows.... i'm about a sixteenth and all I got out of the deal is slightly different cheek-bones and a bit of a squint, and I have the ability to GET a tan but it takes all summer to get arab/hispanic/eurasian brown but then it gets cold and I get pale all over again.

I'd could try to apply at summer's end maybe but my reasoning for application would be to not get screwed for being a disabled vet, white, working, shooting, voting conservative, paying my bills, wiping my own butt, not having bastard children and getting a 18yr or so guaranteed ride on the gravy train to only unleash the next generation of leeches, obeying the law and pulling my own weight while everyone else has the ability to get a handout while doing nothing for society ((I'm not saying all do but the handouts are available)) so I'd probably be denied and blacklisted somehow.

I think all the 'labels" such as Native American, African American, etc. are lame. We are either Americans or we are not Americans. Skin color doesn't make any difference. It's what is inside that makes the difference.

Actually everyone in the western hemisphere known as North America, Central America, and South America are Americans.

AtLaw;
  She's a pretty lady..but obviously not one to trifle with. ;) :D

  My paternal forefathers came here about 1670 and married in with some of the Mayflower stock..There wasn't any place called Ellis Island then either. I do understand, but can't naiol down some indian blood there also..

  In any case I suppose I am a "native" American..by the dictionary definition  http://www.thefreedictionary.com/native

   As was said here, most of American Indian stock simply call themselves Indian...and the "politically correct" terms originated elsewhere;
  I suspect the same place as where the "right not to be offended" and "global warming"..had it's start.

check all that apply, that way you're less likely to get mixed up with someone else (no one committing identity theft is gonna see me as anything but white so it's a leg to stand on, same as putting your actual, current height and weight and not what you want it to be)

that's another one!  some people get to be tall enough to see over the fridge, and reach the top shelves of their cabinets... is that fair.  it's worse than having a tan!  the whole thing is just an attempt to use identity politics to fracture the american collective identity of independence and personal responsibility BUT I'll stop there before I get the ball rolling.  I'll part by saying that current citizenship should be the REAL focus of people in the us right now because that is a real problem.

BINGO!!!  if you're white but not female, gay, knocked up with an illegitimate child, disabled.... gee it seems only conservative white males AREN'T protected, and you have to be a certain level/percentage/perception of something other than "white" too.  on the census I'll be a gay black woman with an illegitimate baby on the way suffering from diabetes from not having a job or physical activity to keep me fit- necessitating my need for welfare to perpetuate my circumstances- and I look like a white man because my palor is drained do to my lack of health and my butchness causes me to work out and chop off my hair.  looks like white males are the ones discriminated against.  especially with that huge l-e-o memo awhile back.  1/4 and 1/2 black aren't enough anymore because it proves that people can integrate!!!  it's like calling barack obama the first "black" president and making such a huge deal about it- most people don't care and why isn't he white?!  He ain't that dark!  He sure ain't held down either  :o

and vets (young and conservative aka right wing whites mainly) are ticking time bombs waiting to go on a shooting rampage and commit acts of right-wing terror BUT we cannot profile muslims from foreign nations serving in the military as nutty shrinks even if they're extremists about to shoot up a base because that's racism??????

see why I shouldn't get going!  anyone else REALLY upset by all this?  :-X

  TeamNelson;
  You have a point there  somebody who plays by the PC rules gets hammered by those same PC poultroons. Surely, we can sympathize with this man from Mozambique. It must be a shattering trauma to suddenly be presented with the discovery that he is a "black man being held prisoner a white body"...   Have these racial justice, do-gooders no empathy ?  :D ;D :o

I think the case of the actual American High School student who moved here from South Africa being expelled for competing for the most Distinguished African American Student award sums up the whole hyphenated-American idiocy.

I lived in Africa for a couple years. Many there would be content to be simply Americans, not hyphenated in any way.  I've often thought it'd be good for some hyphenated-americans to go live in the land of their hyphen for a bit.

My father is full blooded Chiricahua Apache and my mother is Czechoslovakian. So I am half of each. I don't get any tribal rights as my fathers ancestors fought to stay off a reservation, and therefor I am not registered with any tribe. No tribe will accept you as a member of there tribe unless you can prove they are a registered member or had someone registered in there bloodline. As for all the people that clamed 1/16 I don't think you qualify anyway's. Check out your local tribal rules and laws.

I consider myself an American, I tell everyone I am American. But due to the PC B.S. that everyone needed a special name such as African American, Asian American etc, I am considered Native American as that is more my skin color. I cannot clam my mothers side, as I am not light skinned enough to clam white.

I do have a problem with all the other people saying they are African American, Japanese American etc. Pick one country  and stick with it, you are either African or you are American, you are Japanese or you are American.

As for Native American, I don't really see a problem with it. When someone ask what is your ancestry, you can say Irish, German, African etc. What is someone that is Native American suppose to say? So Native American seems to fit.

I have both Cherokee and Creek Indian ancestry but none of them registered and no one in our line has really made any attempt to document it. I really don't care as I'm not trying to get on anyone's rolls and wouldn't even if I could. I really could care less what anyone else with our without indian ancestry feels about it. I prefer "injun" personally, hell it's the way I said it when I was a lad and we played cowboys and injuns and it's still good enough for me.

But on the subject at hand. If you were born in America then in my view you are a native American and for dang sure if both your parents were born here you are as native American as anyone is.

I don't know what a good and proper name should be for the folks who first migrated here and were here with what is called "red skin" when the whites arrived from Europe. I think they mostly preferred to be called by their tribal name whatever it was. I think that is appropriate and is the ONLY thing appropriate to call them when ya get right down to it. Sure those who were born here and who's parents were also properly are/were native American but then so are all who have been born here of parents also born here after them.

None of us at least so the scientist say were here originally all migrated here from elsewhere so it wouldn't be completely correct to call anyone indigenous (sp) to the land.

It has to be one of the most stupid arguments we can get into in my personal opinion. You either are or you are not an American. sure that term could logically be applied to anyone from North, Central or South America but it is uniformly recognized as a title for US Citizens not those of other American nations. Anyone who insists on a hypen and some other name tells me one thing for certain about themself. That being they don't think of themself as an American but rather something else.

I say send the whole hyphenated crew where ever it is they seem so proud of and leave America to those who are proud to be called just American.

Some strong views in the past, too.
------------------------------------

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all. This is just as true of the man who puts "native" before the hyphen as of the man who puts German or Irish or English or French before the hyphen. Americanism is a matter of the spirit and of the soul. Our allegiance must be purely to the United States. We must unsparingly condemn any man who holds any other allegiance. But if he is heartily and singly loyal to this Republic, then no matter where he was born, he is just as good an American as any one else.
The men who do not become Americans and nothing else are hyphenated Americans; and there ought to be no room for them in this country. The man who calls himself an American citizen and who yet shows by his actions that he is primarily the citizen of a foreign land, plays a thoroughly mischievous part in the life of our body politic. He has no place here; and the sooner he returns to the land to which he feels his real heart-allegiance, the better it will be for every good American. There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.
For an American citizen to vote as a German-American, an Irish-American, or an English-American, is to be a traitor to American institutions; and those hyphenated Americans who terrorize American politicians by threats of the foreign vote are engaged in treason to the American Republic. (Theodore Roosevelt, 1915)
