Scope for Daisy 835?
« on: January 25, 2010, 12:43:11 PM »
Not an experienced air gunner, and I use this sweet air rifle in the garage for the family to shoot when the weather is crummy. I don't want/need a high-end scope. Just something basic but durable, 'cause the ol' eyesight ain't what it used to be. I've got a couple of rifle scopes for .22 rimfire aying around, including a Simmons 22 Mag which I believe someone said was ok for airgun use, but I don't know for sure whether that is true.

On the other hand, I've been told not to use a regular rifle scope on a spring air rifle due to the "double" recoil... so I don't want to put the 22 Mag on in case I decide to use it for a future rimfire.

Any thoughts/assistance would be appreciated.

Cheers
Kerry

I'm assuming you mean a Daisy (Avanti) 853.  Never heard of an 835.
The 853 is a single pump pnuemantic...there is virtually no recoil with rifle, so a .22 scoe should work.
The only issue you may have is parallax.

bobtodrick you're right there ain't such a thing as an 835. OOps!  ::) I guess my brain function, as well as my eyesight ain't what it use to be either!

When I bought it (used) it came with a manual/paperwork saying it was 853 - but I just looked at it, and it says Powerline 753 on the receiver. It has the Diopter rear and Globe front sights, and adjustable butt plate. Here's what it looked like when I first brought it home.

Yet when Googling I see the 753 is also called Avanti in some cases..and truthfully, from the pics online I can't tell the difference between the 753, and 853. Bottom line, whatever is stamped on the receiver, I love it!

Since I put this post up a couple of days ago, I did try a rifle scope (TC 1.5x - 5x shotgun scope) and shot it at the low magnification end. Getting crosshairs and target both in focus at my short range (about 18 ft) was not possible, and yes, parallax was an issue. I guess I'll see about getting an inexpensive airgun scope or one with AO.

My browser's security won't let me view the picture you posted, but either the 753 or 853 are single stroke pneumatic air rifles and don't have the recoil that would harm a scope.  Daisy changed the name of their competition line a few years ago.  The name is really all that changed.  The parts from a Daisy x53 series will interchange with Avanti x53 series.
Our youth organization has around 40 of the 853 Avanti's.  They work well and are in a class of their own ('sporter') in the sub-$200 bracket.  The 753 comes with the Gamo sights and a drop-grip stock.  We had about 2 dozen of those at one time.  Unfortunately, it ended up being placed in a 'precision' class and couldn't compete with the FWB's and Styer's or even Avanti's own 888, in the youth market.  For home use and practice, however, I have one and love it.
The 753's shoot quite well.

Once you find one that will provide proper parallax at the short range, fitting a scope should be fun.  It'll give you a good opportunity to evaluate pellets as they are NOT all created equal.

Just my Awf Hand comments...

I have a Tasco 4x20 That I use on my Crosman bb Gun. I can see fine at 20' to 50' No Focus adjust on the Scope,
It's just a 4x20 Wide Angle Tasco, Think I paid $20. 5 years ago at Dunhams Sports.
