What Powder for a semi-auto 9mm Para ??
« on: January 26, 2010, 06:25:42 AM »
I've got a new pistol ! Wahoo !!

I'm going to hand load for a 9mm, new round for me. Using 115 gr. and 124 gr. bullets.

So, what's everybody's favorite powder for this round ??

If your shooting jacketed bullets , its real hard to beat Bullseye or Titegroup , and for cast either Unique or Trailboss .

I've been using 700X mainly because I have a boat load of it.
Remember it's where the first bullet goes out of a cold barrel that counts most.

Alliant's PowerPistol has been my favorite for the 9Luger, but I have also used Bullseye with much success.

Jacketed, for now THANKS !!
I have a friend trying to talk me into "HS-6" , but I know there is a lot of powders to choose from.
I'm curious what other seasoned 9mmers' have to say.
The only thing I dont want is a flame thrower....

AA No. 5 is my standard in the 9mm with 124 grain bullets. Several powders will perform well.

I just set up the chrony yesterday for some 9mm loads. My best was 4.2 grains of H Tightgroup under a Rainier plated 115 grn RN set at 1.09 col. The fps had a very small deviation and average fps was 1087, just about where it should be. I used data from the Hodgdon website. I used a 92fs for testing. The loads cycled great.

The other load was to weak. I tried win 231 at 4.1 grns, same bullet. This load was right near the start in a manual or 2. It was a fair amount slower & didn't cycle reliably. I could of bumped up the 231 charge & would probably fine. I pulled the rest of my low 231 loads & will load some more up with tightgroup.

I did load a few 124 grn HPs with H Universal powder. The few I shot did fine.

Lots of powders work very well in the 9mm. I use Blue dot.

The last time I loaded for the 9MM I was having good results with PB and 700X.  I have a fair amount of powder that covers the burning range from bottom to top; Red Dot, Bulls Eye, WW231, AL-5, AL-7, AL-8, Unique, and 800X.

The primary reason I selected the two powders was I wanted to use those powders up and create space in the powder box.  In fact I stumbled on two very good powders for range ammunition.  After a lot of research I found data that indicates 800X gives top velocity and low pressure.  If that proves true, and there are no functioning issues 800X could prove to be an ideal choice.  I am currently loading 124-grain cast, and 124-grain FMJ for range loads.  Should 800X work out in my pistol in producing accuracy along with top velocity I will invested in 500-HP bullets to stop charging water jugs.  Without a doubt this will require sunshine and the Chrony.

Again I am loading plinking/practice ammunition and not self defense ammunition.  I have factory 9MM+P for defensive purposes.

I have not fired factory or my reloads across the Chrony but I believe the loads I created using 700X come close to duplicating 115 and 124 grain factory velocities.  PB is about fifty feet per second slower than 700X.

The 9MM is a fun cartridge to load and shoot but it is not my first choice as a defensive round.  Having said that I have tumbled over a thousand pieces of once fired 9MM brass the last couple of days.  Most of it will be set aside for future loading, but some will get filled with PB and 700X, with another fifty each getting test loads of Unique and 800X.

I checked my load books last night and see I used Unique last time I loaded for 9mm (1998!!). I picked it for burn rate and because I had a good supply. I think I was happy with the load. Been messing with 40's, 41 mags, 38/357 more and the 9 has been neglected. Before that I had played with Herco loads and Green Dot to use up some partial cans I had.

I use Bullseye personally but AA2 is another excellent choice. I started using Bullseye very early in my reloading career and kinda fell in love with it in spite of how easy it is to do a double charge with it. I tend to use it a lot when others would use a more bulky powder.

I have just set up safety procedures in my loading technique to make sure I don't double charge with it.

I use bluedot which works well with 115 grain pellets. I always have plenty of bluedot on hand for my field shotgun loads.

There are so many good powders these days that give good results in the 9mm. When I first started loading handgun cartridges, it was Bullseye, Unique, and 2400. One of the three worked for just about anything I wanted to load. For my action pistol game loads (9/.40/.45), I'm currently using "Promo". I made a deal on 16# of the stuff, and it works well using Red Dot data. Pryor to the Promo, I used Bullseye. Both powders work great for my applications. I haven't chronographed  the 9mm Promo loads with the 125gr cast bullets yet. I'll have to get around to that before I shoot a sanctioned match of course. I don't think I'll have any problem making PF with it.  Should it be a problem, I have several pounds of BE around. It's hard to beat!
