.357 Maximum, Energy

Anyone know the energy at 100 yards for the .357 Max?  To be legal for deer here in Colorado, the rifle must produce 1000 pounds of energy at 100 yards.

It is no longer a production round. Load it as hot as you want.

As long as it's on an SB2 frame, I wouldn't push it on an SB1.  ;)

If you can do the math, I can tell you mine does 2000fps with a 180gr speer at the muzzle.

 Numbers on paper do not calculate the difference a bullets diameter or profile. They measure results of a projectiles weight at a given velocity. In real world results, BOTH a bullets diameter and its profile make a huge difference and really "UP" that bullets performance on game. Its a old argument, Hi velocity vs big diameters. I subscribe to the superiority of a large diameter, heavy bullet. Someone shooting very long range would be more hung up on a sleek bullet profile at high velocity.
  Long story short, don't be too hung up in paper ballistics, its a reference or rough guide only.

It was a factory PISTOL round. Ballistics are not going to show what you want them to.

There are definitely two schools of thought. Big and blunt then the small in diameter and high velocity. Both get the job done, but the bullet must still be placed where it counts, no matter the diameter of the projectile. This "discussion" has been going on for some time. Jack O'Connor subscribed to the high velocity line of thought and Elmer Kieth subscribed to the bigger the better school. Both were successful. Picking the correct bullet for the velocity attained, the size of the game animal and placing it where it matters is the most important thing. However, there is some thing to be said about a blunt bullet going slow that just seems to knock game over. There have been lots of all size of game killed with a 44 Magnum handgun with heavy bullets, some of which were cast semi-wadcutters or flat points that do not expand at all.

What about a 1985 Model 058 with a 357max barrel? In respect to pressures, should I treat it like a SB1 frame, or like an SB2 frame?

The 058 was also available in 30-30 which has a SAAMI MAP of 42kpsi, the Max is rated at 40kpsi, so as long as you use published data, you should be fine.
