Sad day for Bonanza TV series fans
« on: January 26, 2010, 03:10:44 PM »
Well, it was announced today that the last cowboy of the TV series Bonanza died yesterday. Pernell Roberts, who played the role of Adam, Ben Cartwright's oldest son, died yesterday from complications with Pancreadic Cancer. He was 81. The leading cast is now all gone from one of the greatest TV series ever. I still watch the reruns on TV Land today. A bit hoky at times, but good clean family TV. I can remember my brother and I being glued to TV screen when we were kids watching this series.

Bummer!

For me, the end of the TV era died with the passing of Al Lewis, whose thespian resume included the great Grandpa Munster.

Yes Skarke, those are all great shows. BTW: Here is a great site dedicated to Bonanza. Lots of great detail on each specific show that aired. I read here a lot. Just great reading and I've even visited some of these film sites here in northern and central Cal. The areas around Lake Tahoe is some of the most amazing country you will ever see. Looks the same as when they shot the scenes way back in the 60's. Unfortuniatly, the site that had the Pondarosa Ranch is no longer a musem site dedicated to the TV show. Its privatly owned and no longer open to the public. It closed up about 3 or so years ago.

I and my family watched it regularly in the sixties! I always hated the green shirt or jacket that Lil Joe always wore. My favorite parts were the shots of the scenery there and I dont mean the ones of Virginia City and the front of the Ponderosa Homestead.  We are getting old fellas!

I went to a sight the other day for James Arness, he's still around, still Marshall Dillion to me.

When I was stationed in Germany back in the early 80's, it was fun to watch Bonanza in German, on Sunday nights. It was a big hit with the Germans!

Ahh yes, James Arness. He also stared in one of the other great western series of the 70's named How The West Was Won. Another great one. This will bring back some memories...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hBC27Xem-EU

OK, who's going to man up and admit liking Little House and The Waltons ;D ;D ;D ;D?  Seriously, I was a youngster when these were on, and I very much enjoyed watching them. (though my Dad would have liked to shoot the TV when we were watching them).

When my wife and I had kids there were so few quality family shows on, we found ourselves searching.  Well, the bottom line was that that everybody liked them, and they made for good family entertainment.

My college age daughter shuts her dorm room door to get her Little House fix between classes, and my super tough, 13 year old son likes the Waltons, which I find really interesting because he is a beast athlete and a real man's man.

Pernell Roberts walked off Bonanza fairly early on, because he didn't think they were payin him what he should be paid. It was said he was very difficult to work with. I never worked with him, but I do remember him walkin off. All good things come to an end I suppose.

Skarke,
I will admit to it. Those were great shows as well. The Waltons is clearly one of the best ever if not THE best. My wife and I are planning on ordering the DVDs for all the 9 year series. All the series were recently released to DVD.

A little bit of nostagia nonsense. Any of you ever use one of those viewmasters? You put the round disc in, hold it up to the light, and click the pictures around. And there was a caption with each picture. Well, don't remember who discovered it, but I remember seeing the picture, and the article. Seems that when they did some of those on the Bonanza show, nobody noticed that all the actors had there,I believe, right hand in their pants pocket. BUT, their middle finger was outside. Nobody caught it for 20 years. Yep, will miss shows like that. gypsyman

Only a couple of years Dee,

I remember those as well. heck I remember when we got our first TV. It was Black and White and about the size of a small computer monitor. Used to watch Chet Huntley and David Brinkley on the evening news.

The real story behind Robert's departure was he was supposed to be married to an Indian girl on the show. He insisted on a black gal playing the part. It wound up in a huge fight and he found out he wasn't nearly as important as he thought he was.

I never liked Roberts or any of the characters I ever saw him play. After leaving Bonanza I think he played a bad guy every role after that. I saw an old rerun of Have Gun Will Travel the other day with him as the primary bad guy in it. Paladin took care of him tho.

well as to the characters.. little joe made the most of his carreer..i alway liked the themes of shows he produced..
now my favorite bonanza character was was hoss.. his always said ,pa do you want me to whuppim..
an he could walk the walk..
just tv character actors but hoss played his well.. not a mean bone in his body ,,but a bully bettert tread lightly around him. :)slim
bullies need a lesson taught toim..i helped a few see the light myself ,,in more ablebodied days..
now i just look one square in the eye,an tellim im gonna own everything you got if you do what you got in mind..ive smartened up since my latest altercation. slim
ps don t fear gettin a whippin but now i ll just take everything he owns ,,provided theres witnesses to him beaten up an old man.. each punch that bruises or breaks the skin ,,just makes my case better when the law gets there.. im a man of peace.. but still won t let a bully run over me,or anybody i see him bullying..
you just got to know how to maneuver him into assaulting you.. all that takes is looking him in the eye with contempt.. being as im  old an weak,,he can t resist ..
wish i could still just invite him to the woods where we could settle it old school .. without his hangers on who hang withim to drink his whisky..a bully seldom stands alone.. jmo slim

::) No Cabin I don't care to elaborate. Your perception of Mr. Roberts is his short stint on Bonanza, and your melancloy feelings toward what you THINK he was. He reputation as an ass was legendary, probably BEFORE you were born, or at least old enough to find the on-off knob on the TV.
Green, Blocker, and Little Joe were the main stay. Dan Blocker was a good guy and died unexpectedly, and was actually missed.
No one really cared when Roberts left. He was even an ass in off screen interviews at times. I PERSONALLY watched some of these interviews. You were probably trying to learn your first word, or how to crawl, provided you had been born by then.

I remember we were the first family in our neighborhood to have a TV, in 1952.  All the neighbor hood kids wanted to come to our house.  TV programming was lacking back then, but we had Red Skelton, Milton Burle, Jack Benny, Bob Hope, Dina Shore, and Lawrence Welk.  Some nights we were desperate, any thing to keep from going to bed early.

I remember when Bonanza and Gunsmoke first came on the air.  I liked Ben Cartwright's horse, I always liked duns.  Of course that big heavy horse Hoss rode was a good looking animal too.  But I remember the Chevorlet commercials at the end of the show, especially Ben talking about the Corvette.  Marshal Dillion, Chester, Miss Kitty, and Doc.  Festes Haggen came along years later.

Wagon Train, and all the ones Scootrd mentioned earlier.  Along with Roy Rogers, Fury, Sky King, Rin Tin Tin, They all had a message.  That is what is missing in todays world.  I look back and watch those old shows, today they seem so hokey, but back then they were so real to everyone.

The wife gave me Sky King collection last year.  I sit down and watch them in the mornings.  Sometimes Sky (my son) sits and watches them with me.  Often he comments, "I'm glad my name sake is not showing today".
Where is old Joe when we really need him?  Alaska Independence    Calling Illegal Immigrants "Undocumented Aliens" is like calling Drug Dealers "Unlicensed Pharmacists"
What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

cabin4:

your point is well taken..many of the good clean family TV shows are gone along with those that starred in them. there is no comparision between the anything goes nothing sacred sitcoms of today with those then that let kids believe in the good guy. those shows in their own way promoted clean living strong character and the idea that good will triump over the bad. i for one dreamed at night of being just like some of those early screen heros and i am sure many here did also.

todays shows lead our youth to believe in nothing, accept that being cool is much more important than strenght of character. to be outside the laws of the land is the way to go, not inside. betrayal is not only to be accepted but encouraged.

the gist is that we as a society have lost our moral compass and that is reflected in the present day shows that our children watch.

none of us are fools. we know that the guy on the screen is nothing more than an actor with all the failings of all humans off the screen. the kids today seem to think these on screen heros like Brad Pitts or Russel Crow are in fact real and that they are just like what they dipict on the screen. sadly they show us everyday just how human they are nothing at all like the heros they play. that is the one truth of Pernell Roberts and all since before and since.

Dee,
You should not mention tid bits then take a pass on elaborating. Not sure I understand the bait & switch tactic. Seems a bit weird to me.

As far as me having melancholy feeling towards Parnell, I never said anything, that would lead you to beleive that, nor did I write I did. ::) I simply passed on the news link about a TV show that I like. He may very well have been an ass. I don't know. But the old saying of "it takes one to know one" seems to apply in this case.

Unlike you, I don't track the Hollywood crowds personal lives nor do I care to, nor have I ever had the displeasure of spending so much time with them like you.

Parnell may very well have been a big ass but I see no need for you to act like one yourself or for you to provide wild speculation about what I feel. I might tell you if you ask or maybe I’ll I just tell you to go change your depends diaper and mind your own damn business for being a jerk.

Hey Sword,
You invited you this argument? Apparently you must feel Dee is incapable of continuing the crap slinging he started. Learn how to read and when you do, you will see that I did not start anything other than post the link until Dee came in with the crap and now you, his apparent child prodigy.

I'm not surprised you liked Hop Sing the best. He was the most insignificant character to the show as you are to this web site.

I had acousin that went to college with Dan Blocker, said he was one of the
nicest and craziest guys you would every meet. said Blocker used to ride his motor cycle through town standing in the seat.

Read an article the other day about John Wayne being ask to star in a new
TV western. Wayne looked it all over and said he had a YOUNG friend
that might be better for the part, he introduced them to James Arness
and Gunsmoke was born.

Anybody remember "Candy" and" Will Cartwright" ( a cousin i think) of TV Zorro fame.

Ok Oldshooter you have really tripped me up, don't remember ever seeing  any
Cartwrights on the Zorro show ??? ;D
I remember a Candy that worked for the Cartwrights.
