He also says it was hand-loads .........................................................

A lot of incidents trace back to handloads.  It's a great hobby, but some people just shouldn't do it.  I can't count how many locals - knowing I handload - have asked me to load them up something with "extra powder".  Usually I just tell them (sometimes truthfully, sometimes not) that I don't have a die set for whatever they're shooting.  Of course then I get the inevitable blank stare wondering what a die set is.

Then there's the ones who have gotten a mixed up list in their head of different cartridges they think you can fire out of other rifles.  One guy swore up and down (and could not be convinced otherwise) that it was perfectly fine to fire .303 British out of a .410 shotgun.

I cringe at the thought of some of those guys getting their hands on a press.

There used to be a place called Springfield Sporters. It was near Penn Run, Pa. They dealt mostly in surplus military Arms. Last time I was there , they had a bunch of .303 Mk. 4 converted to single shot .410`s. Wonder if that is where He got the idea that a 410 could be fired in a .303???

It may have word-of-mouthed from there and he heard it out of context.  This particular guy isn't really that well traveled, but pre-internet information certainly did spread in odd ways.  He's more or less the town drunk - he never has a gun for too long before selling it.  Only reason .303 even came up (it's fairly rare around here) was because someone GAVE him an old SMLE with a scope on it as a favor so he could hunt.  Since he's disabled (accident from DUI . . .) he has a free lifetime hunting license.  After he inevitably sold THAT too, he still had a few .303 rounds he found and was looking for something to shoot them in.  He swore his uncle used to shoot the .303's out of a .410 all the time.

You just have to appreciate the area.  There are a lot of REALLY good hunters around here.  Far better than me that's for sure.  I've learned though that hunting knowledge and gun knowledge often have zero in common with each other.

Don't know what went wrong but a couple of years ago I walked into a local gun shop and there on the counter were the pieces of a new Browning A bolt in .25-06 seems the guy that was shooting it getting ready for deer season in a hurry of course was shooting several different rifles and calibers one happened to be a .308 by mistake chambered a .308 in the .25-06 and it went off. No one got hurt but the rifle was a total wreck, barrel split in half from the receiver forward most of that gone, the bolt was laying in the bottom half of the action it apparently never moved the rear part of the receiver was intact, scope gone was a new Leupold 4X14 the guy shooting had a permanent indent on the top of his nose and a permanent flinch I would guess. All said and done I would say very lucky, there were several other people around and no one was injured in any way. Can't be too carefull.

so the bullet profile wasn't long enough to prevent it and/or the bullet was seated deep enough that the guy didn't get more than the tip in the barrel...?  I'd have thought that a .30 wouldn't fit but I can see how it would if the whole diameter of the bullet didn't get past the chamber shoulder.  WOW!
