Ya'll are the cause!!
« on: January 27, 2010, 04:02:48 PM »
Well, after long consideration, I came up with a plan to now to support this new habbit of Handi ownership. After smoking for a great many years, I put a pencil to it, and realized that I could support my new habbit, but getting rid of another...... So, the way I got it figured, I can get a new rifle every 10 weeks, if I kick this smoking habbit. Don't know which one is worse yet, but love both. On a more serious note, I know I will have to find something to keep me busy so I won't smoke for a while, so I have 2 handis, one 223 bull barrel (and it drills), and yes one 45/70 on the way, which has not had a box shot through it yet, so getting it ready to go when I get it will help for a short period, but thought I would pass this idea along if anyone needed a way to pay for them, and save money along the way too. Thanks to all of you, for the input and ideas, you all are a great bunch!

I can't think of a better habit swap. Guns are my cocaine. When I get stressed or angry with the idiots I have to deal with on a regular basis, it is me, my shotgun, a box of skeets, and a case of shells!!! It is on for a little while, then I can go on dealing with the idiots as usual.

Great decision. I will be rooting for you.

Good luck with the habit switch and thanks for the idea.  Since I don't smoke all I got to do is convince the wife to quit. Maybe I should buy the guns first and then tell her she has to quit or we can't make the house payment?  Probably not, since she can shoot better than I can.

I quit after 40 years, 1 "coronary event" and 9 stents.  But as far as saving money, handi's and reloading from .243 to 45-70 will eat it up.  Worth it, though, to be there when #1 grandson dropped his first black bear with the 45-70 at 30 yds with a home-rolled hardcast.

I decided to quit after many trys when my first son was born, he will be 30 in Oct. I may have a cigar with him in a couple weeks though. Just found out my two cousins are full of Cancer and both their parents died a very nasty way. Very nice people smoking to the end. The way I smoked I could buy and scope 1 Handi a month with ammo at todays costs. I can find nothing wrong with quiting.
And as was said I kinda like "Smokin Handis" ;D
Good Luck to YA!

If you factor in the cost of by-pass surgery, mine was over $60,000 in January '03, and cost of missed income with no self employed insurance for sick leave, you can likely buy one a week for a very long time.  Heck you might even catch up with Quick in four or five years ;D

Stick with it even if you end up starting again keep trying, I was one of the lucky few that kicked it the first time I tried, Breraking nine ribs and spending a week in the hospital did help.

What an excellent plan! I quit 20-plus years ago, when smokes were about 75 cents a pack. Toughest thing I ever did, but sooo worth it! Now if I could quit the beer, I could buy six handis a year with the savings ...

OK, I'm not an anti smoking nut. Several years ago a gas meter reader stopped to read my meter. We started talking in my driveway. He said he wanted to quit smoking. I told him you have to WANT to quit and that I quit, the last time, 20 years ago, by SUCKING on a star mint everytime I had the urge to have a cig. It seemed that by the time the mint was gone, so was the urge to have a smoke. I did go through several bags of mints at first. A few years past and I was working on a house a few miles from mine and a guy pulled up and ask me if I remembered him. I said he seemed a bit familiar. Shorten up. He was there to read the meter. He thanked me VERY MUCH for my method. He quit and was very happy. (You Have To Want To Quit) The only thing I guess this has to do with Handis is I'm still her to shoot them with my kids ;D

Quitting smoking is easy, I've done it several times. First time I quit for a year and a half and ended up with high blood pressure. Went back to smoking again like I never quit. I tried again a few years back and after three weeks I found out that I was diabetic. Am I jinxed or what? Went back to smoking again like I never quit. I think I've been smoking now for about 36 years and we all know this isn't healthy. Probably sent a few Marlboro execs on some real nice vacations over the years.
I really like your plan and it's getting tough to support both habits anyway. I may just follow your excellent example. Let us know how you make out.
I'm cheering for you!

I sat down and figured out I would have an extra $2400 each year to spend on filling my gun safe. There's the Ed Brown 1911 I always wanted in just the first year.

Got to be the contrarian here. Need you to keep smoking so that I can get the extra OT shifts to buy me some Handi's. Seeing how it averages out that 75% of all patient in my oncology/hospice unit have a 10+ year history of smoking, I'd be hard pressed to buy a box of .22 ammo if y'all quit. Even better yet, why not switch from cigarettes to chew since there is the same correlation between oral tobacco and prostate CA as there is between cigarettes and lung CA? That works out just as well for me.

Indulge in ethanol also. Moderation is for monks. Abuse that ole' liver and destroy the blood filtration system. Doesn't bother me to assist the doc to put a 1/4" x 8" needle in your side to drain off the gallon of fluid your liver cannot handle anymore.

In fact, I've volunteered to work tonight to be able to send off the USPMO for a CMP Garand on Feb 5th.  8)
<TongueInCheek/>

Something to chew on. I'm planning on getting 3 CMP Garands, 3 Glock 19's{one for me, one for my daughter, and one for my niece}, a Pardner pump shotgun, a CavArms AR15, and a Handi .308 Survivor this year just by working some extra shifts on the weekends. And 75% of it will be paid through the pain/agony/illnesses of cigarette smokers.

When I was doing my nursing clinicals I had a patient that had just been diagnosed with lung cancer and was going to loose his left lung. His family was sneaking him in ciggarettes to the hospital. thats one of the few times my jaw hit the floor. Been 24 years since I quit smoking and don't miss them at all anymore.

Maybe that is why I was able to buy so many guns.  I quite smoking 40 years ago and quite drinking 20 years ago.

Then Michelle made me quite chasing women 33 years ago.  Guns was the only thing left.

At least women don't get jealous if you bring home a new gun.  Bring home a new girl friend could get me shot.  Or worse yet, Michelle holding up a knife and saying, "Remember Loraina".    Loraina Bobbett for those of you younger one that missed it.

Bluecow:  I have a big collection of Mershram Pipes, all tobacco stained, and well used.  But today they sit in a glass case, beautiful to look at.  Every once in a while I have the urge to take one out and fill the bowl, but then I think about how hard it is to breath after I do that.  So I leave them where they sit.

I used to smoke 2 cigars a day.   These were full Churchill size cigars.    That was 20 yrs ago.   I tapered off over the last decade but 4 yrs ago when my wife decided to quit cigarettes cold turkey, I gave up smoking cigars.

I still have a humidor full of good Cuban cigars and I open it up once a month to check the humidity and rotate the stash.     I still Love to breath in the fragrance of the tobacco and cedar but that 's as far as it goes.     Like Sourdough said, I remember what my lungs felt like for days after when I smoked one of those.

I give them away at Christmas time occasionally.

My dad is 80, he started smoking at age 12.  He is now in the second stage of emphsema.  Yes, he's quit now-50 years too late.  He goes on his walker from the recliner to bed, and sounds like he's run a marathon.  I've had two tracheostomies from allergies due to second hand smoke.  His cigarettes have killed him (allmost) and caused me a lot of health issues in my life.  That is the bad thing about smoking, everyone around you is helping you smoke.  WANT TO or NOT.  Quit now guys, please.
