Man, does someone need to go over there and straighten these guys out!
Better not be tyke though, he would scare the heck out of them with the loads he was shooting.
Then again, no he wouldn't because they would swear that he was lying.   :D ;D
We surely don't want to send Richard (ATLaw).
With his southern use of English and his wit he would have them so confused they wouldn't know what the devil he was talking about.   ???

Alright guys, it was me.  I'm still trying to get all the info I can on doing this.  The guys on the Alaska Forum are good guys.  They like good projects as I do.  Everyone who I talk to seem to think this is way over the top.  I still have a host of questions.  Such as:

1)  Do your loads use fillers?  If so, what and how do you load each round.
2)  What is the cost of the reamer? or what did it run to have it done.
3)  If I use a regular handi, how much will I loose in velocity?
4)  Load Data.

Tyler has been absolutely GREAT in helping me.  I find myself wanting to start this project, but I feel I need more data on doing so.  I have asked questions in the Graybeard Handloading forums and didn't get much other then good info on black powder loads.  So I used my other resources.  Your thoughts.....

Ron

BTW:  I have lived in Alaska before and will be heading back there when I retire.  That is why I also post there.

Ron,

I think your questions were on 45-90, didn't see another here on the 45-120. But to answer some of your questions, you can rent a reamer for less than $50 including shipping from 4D or Elk Ridge. I had mine done by a local smith, cost was $135 including the rented reamer, but you can do your own by hand, there are a few members here that have done them, Richard and Joe to name a couple.

As for filler, put enough powder in it and you won't need any filler!!  ;D Even using AA's data for 5744, you won't need filler, it works excellent as it is, I only loaded a bit above what they list at 31kcup, but I didn't see a problem working on up. I didn't have QuickLoad at the time, but using Tyler's and Richard's loads would be a perfect place to start from, just depends on what bullet you want to use, the 405gr Rem isn't a good choice as Tyler found out, the 350gr Hornady is another matter tho, it's a great bullet, the 400gr Speer would be a fairly good one in the same weight range as the 405gr Rem.

There's data on AmmoGuide from a shorter barrel, 500gr at 2100fps in a 24" barrel, I don't know what pressure he was running it at tho, Tyler's loads were kept at a predicted 40kpsi maximum to prevent damage to the underlug, the 500S&W has known issues with underlug setback at 50kpsi and the slightly bigger case head. I can run some QL3.5 predictions for you based on the shorter barrel to give you and idea of what to expect.

Tim,

Thanks.  I would like all the help I can get.  I have always loaded by the book.  I have never taken a leap such as this when loading my firearms.  I hope I'm not missing something but what is the rifle life be when shooting loads of 500 grains at 2200 fps?

Thanks Again.

I ran a prediction using 130gr water capacity which is close, at 40kpsi as a max pressure, a 350gr Hornady RN at 2400fps which is doable in the 22" barrel, would have 55lb recoil. The only way to get the 500gr bullet to 2200fps in the 22" barrel would be to exceed 50kpsi, recoil in an 8lb rifle would be 85lbs.

Then that doesn't give me a whole lot over say the 45-70 loads put out by Grizzly.  So then even a 45-90 wouldn't really give me any big change over that either.  So then the question is to stay safe really is to stay in the range of the hottest 45-70 loads.  Recoil is not the issue, it is just a safety thing.  I would like to push the envelope and be as safe as possible.  So the 400 grain at 2550 fps is also doable and still stay safe?  If so, then the project would still payoff.  Thanks Again

Grizzly 350gr ammo runs about 2100fps, 300fps is a considerable increase. The short barrel is killing velocity here, best I could get was 2400fps with the 400gr Speer, pressure would be right there with the 500S&W which isn't unsafe, just hard on the underlug, if you didn't shoot it a lot, it would be fine, you could always do the underlug improvement(FAQs) when you refit the barrel if it did set back.

I use cotton as a filler in my loads, just put it about even with the case neck loosely, and let the bullet compress it to hold the powder.

Have you tried IMR 4064 in your loads?  If so, does it do as well as the 4320?

I've tried IMR4320 and IMR4831.  Both did satisfactorily for me  ;)

Because most of the loads only use 90 or so grains, would there be much of a difference using 45-110 or 45-100?  Or would the pressures be to much?

The lower the case capacity, the higher the pressure needs to be to achieve the same velocity. Hodgdon and Lyman data are good examples of this, the 45-120 can achieve 1800fps with 60gr of H4895 under a 500gr cast bullet at less than 30kpsi, a 45-70 needs nearly 40kpsi to achieve the same velocity.
