Reloading Slugs
« on: January 28, 2010, 01:41:14 PM »
Hi guys im new on here, had a question about reloading slugs that i hope you guys could answer.im interested about loading my own.ive reloaded my own rifle shells for years and i thought it mite kinda be along the same principle?.....From what ive heard you can cast your own slugs from stuff offered from lyman.what i was interested in was the lightfields.Has anyone pursued this and had significant success with it? I shoot lightfield slugs now and like.i thought by reloading them myself i could save a buck and tighten my groups up.So my questions is what all do i need to load them beside hulls, primers, powder, bullets and sabots? And how much money am i talkin for a setup? Thank you very much for your input.

Sounds like you have a powder scales so all you need is----
1-roll crimper-- $10 to $15, use hand drill or drill press
2-all ready primed straight wall hulls--$.13 a piece
3-Lightfeild Commander IDS- slug sabot combo about $80 a hundred or SPW's that are about the same for 1/2 the price
4-published powder charge of choice-1# $15 to $18

Questions:
1. Do the SPW's need the roll crimp or will they work with a standard crimp?
2. Is the rifling engaged by the wad or by the lead slug?  In other words, is the rifling going to get leaded or "plasticked"?
Thanks!!

The lead never touches the bore and they say there sabot does'nt plastic foul the bore. You can crimp either way but if you hunt better roll crimp so the game cop doesn't cut them open to see inside Get the crimping tool it's very easy to do.

Thank you.
I notice that Slugs-R-Us doesn't offer a roll crimp tool in 20 gauge, and I can't find any contact info on their site.  Does anyone have an email address for them?  Or barring that, does anyone know where a 20 gauge roll crimp tool can be had?
*edit* never mind...found the 20ga tool at Precision Reloading.

Hastings is out of busness now, but if you are worried about the game cop then i recommend Lyman 525 gr slugs in the clear Fiocchi cases.  My load once i get all components will be 12 ga 2.75 525 gr in fiocci cases. lysma srh says 1520 fps but i expect about 1450 in my mossy 500.

I use all brass hulls, they use rifle primers and a card wad on top with a slight roll crimp, they work great.  forgot to metion, I use American Pioneer black powder substitute too!  Love the smoke!

Ballistic Products has everything you need.  I have used their dangerous game slug for years with great success.
