In my humble opinion, without a doubt, I would try to find a clean, used Winchester 9422 lever action in .22 mag.  They were made in several variations (pre-XTR, post XTR, checkered, uncheckered, with and without a safety) but are kind of rare among later Winchesters in that all variations were top quality guns.  Slick actions, reliable feeding, and decent triggers.   I had two, a first year model (I think about 1973 or so), and a new one bought in 2001 in 22 lr.  Both are high quality.  Still have the early one.  Shoots great with the Winchester Dynapoint load, about 3/4 of an inch at 50 yards, and is my favorite fall turkey rifle since I moved out here to PA.

I agree with Larry, without a doubt the winchester 9422M is the best of the lot.  ;D The only complaint I ever had with the ones I owned was they are so light and you really half to pay attention when shooting them. Not much weight to help steady them.

I believe they may be the very best pure surival gun, if you stockpile enough ammo to last indefinately. There really isn't anything you can't kill with one. The ammo is light weight and it's easy to carry lots of it.

But for normal hunting, outside a surival situation, I rarely had a use for it so I ended up selling the 3 or so I've owned. The ammo is too expensive to plink with and not legal for most hunting in many states.  ::) My 22 mags are in handguns now days.

The Winchester 9422M's are very nice guns.  I picked up a Henry that is half the price and is just as smooth.  Even lighter than the Winny and is accurate enough to put the hurt on a Jackrabbit at about 100 yds.  If I ever find a good deal on the Winchester I'm gonna snatch it up.  DP
