1st Annual GBO Miniature Cannon Club Postal Shoot. Results
« on: January 28, 2010, 06:36:38 PM »
1st Annual GBO Miniature Cannon Club Postal Shoot.
NOTE: Because of snow in Montana in September, deadline has been Extended.  Shoot no later than midnight Sunday September 26, 2010.  Postmark no later than October 1, 2010.

Starting February 1, 2010 and ending September 22 the range is open for the 1st Annual GBO Miniature Cannon Club Postal Shoot. This shoot is to carry on the tradition of miniature cannon shooting as practice by the South African Miniature Cannon Club, Durban, South Africa. All shooting shall be in keeping with the spirit of that tradition- "shoot in the spirit of the original".

This shoot is for miniature smooth bore Cannons under .800 shooting round ball projectiles using black powder.

The course of fire is 6 shots fired at 22 yards on a B17 target. Two targets are fired and scored. The best 5 shots on each target are scored.  Shots touching the line scores the higher value.

Guns cannot have sights, but muzzle disks and target spots are allowed.

Breech rope/recoil restraints are allowed, but guns can not be tied down or anchored.  The exception is swivel guns.  Guns like those used in fortifications mounted on sliding carriages are not considered tied down or anchored.  Shooting platforms are allowed.

Entry fee is $3 for 2 targets, reentry or multiple entries is $3 for 2 targets. No limit on number of entries.

To enter click on the email icon under my user name at the left and send me a message asking for entry.  I will send you an email with the address info where to send your entry fee.

You get two targets. Practice on some other targets and shoot these two targets only for score. Targets with more than 6 shots will be disqualified.  After shooting fill out the label on the target and return them to the address on the back.  Targets must be post marked no later than September 24.

All scores will be posted.  Ties will broken by earliest post mark.

Prizes-none, other than the prestige of shooting your cannon well.

Aiming and target spot instructions have been posted at Aiming a Cannon without sights, South African style .

It has been suggested that you post pictures of targets and guns.  That’s optional, but encouraged.  Post them to this thread.

Q&A's on the postal are found in the post Postal Shoot.  Look there first.  If the answer is not there, ask your question there.

FIRE!!!!!!!

DD,
Did you ever recieve my second target?

(Mod note here are NVWalt's targets.)

T-1

T-2

Cannon: .50 cal. 7inch barrel ( and a very rough barrel at that, looks like a lot of drill chatter in it). Solid steel Nepolean style carriage. With a removable breach to make cleaning a whole lot easier.
Load is 38 gr of 2f @ 850 fps( .44mag case full) with a .495 Lee roundball patched with t-shirt material and Crisco. No fuse, just a gob-o-powder and a torch.
I would take a picture but do not own a digital camera.
 Good shooting to all, Walt

Tell ya the truth, I hope I end up near the bottom of the list here. That would mean that the postal has a good response. Seems to be the problem with postals, not enough entries. No matter what shoot, bang, game you play.

Here is a sample of the targets we fired at the Camp Hale WWII Small Arms Range.

M&T&Pugwash

I point to the my last two shots out of 12.  I missed, probably over, the first target and only managed two in the cardboard of the target backer.  The second was much better after I figured out how high I was shooting.  Gary suggested an aiming rock on the ground 3 yards in front of the target frame.  It worked and my last two were almost in the black.

A closer look at target #2.  Yes, I know the first shot missed this target too.

Mike high score, 35 target.

Gary, "It's only 34."  Mike, "Look over here it's a 35!"  34, 35!  34!  Are you blind, it's a 35.  Mike finally won after Gary started spitting more pieces of his tooth on the ground and forgot what they were discussing.

It's a solid 34, Mike, just like the last one!

It touched the line, Mike, do you need new glasses, or what?

Smokin' my pipe on the mountings, sniffin' the mornin'-cool,
I walks in my old brown gaiters along o' my old brown mule,
With seventy gunners be'ind me, an' never a beggar forgets
It's only the pick of the Army that handles the dear little pets - 'Tss! 'Tss!

Well, I don't have a historic range, only the "local" public range that we shoot our reduced range high power rifle matches at.  So along with sticking my Empty Chamber Indicator in my match AR long enough to prevent my firing of the 20 shot slow fire stage, I also fired a few shots from my new Uberti Second Model Dragoon and exercised my ruptured case extractor on a fellow shooter's AK; a busy day no doubt.  On to the first target:

After finally getting on the paper with the third shot, I moved down next to the aiming black and decided to go for record.  The target stand was in a slight gulch below the firing point and after the first record shot, the elevation screw came totally out of the carriage and things got worse from there.  From the top, this target has a miss at 12 o'clock, a 4 at 2 o'clock, a 5 at 2:30, a 7 at 12 o'clock, a 7 at 6 o'clock and a 2 at 5 o'clock.  Ugly; 25 points.

The second target is even worse.  Starting with a miss at 1 o'clock, we go to a 4 at 2 o'clock, a 6 at 2:30, a 4 at 4:30, a 5 at 5:30 and a 2 at 6:30.  Uglier; only 21 points here.

I would whine about the smoothbore here but I couldn't find any of my shots from the rifled Dragoon.  I guess I need more practice.

Just a reminder tomorrow is the post mark deadline for the Postal.

If you think your scores are good enough think again.  Here is the last mohts match Reports form the Cannon club in Durban South Africa.  Look at the scores.  If you fired both targets and only scored the best 5 shoots, you were right in there with the rest of SA shooters. Cheap shot fully in tended.  Numbers in Parentheses is the handicap. Oh yes the score is the average of the two fired.

Dear Members and Gunners,

You may have noticed that there was no news letter for August, must apologize, just to busy, but here are the scores for that shoot.

Scores for August.
              Friend                      Brian             48  (3)           1st    overall
              Hamlinton                Colin            45  (5)           2nd   overall
              Hamilton                  Don              44  (3)           3rd   overall
              McCain                    Patrick          41  (11)         1st    on handicap
              Grayson                   Don              39  (10)          2nd   on handicap
              Visser             John           43  (6)           2nd   on handicap

              Beach                      Stan              40 (8)             3rd    on handicap
              Bellars                     Colin            20 (12)

Brian Friend managed an aggregate of 94 for the shoot and the Friend trophy.

Had to happen sooner than latter, forgot my cannon barrel at home and was obliged to shoot the clubs cannon,  - oh boy and my score reflects that, I can only wonder with humble respect and amazement at how well Douglas Dickens managed to shoot “that” small cannon. The guests have my sympathy.

Douglas presented a really inspiring and detailed report about building and shooting a copy of  “that” clubs cannon. The folder also has 2 DVD, with photos and videos of the building of the cannon and some artillery manuals. Beautiful beautiful Douglas.

Scores for September.
            Friend                      Brian             48   (3)          1st    overall

So Douglas,
What are your thoughts on the handicap you mentioned? Just curious. I see 7 posts and to me I believe it to be a good postal. You generally only ever get a few posts on any postal match. Looking forwards to next years postal and maybe a few better scores. At least scores good enough to do a postal with or against the SAMCC. Good shooting,....Walt

Some people just refuse to submit scores unless they are good scores.  Some people refuse to compete unless they shoot good scores right from the start.

The whole purpose of the South African Miniature Cannon club is fellow ship, not scores. Its about learning to shoot these little guns---with out sights!

The first time I shot, I had the folks at SAMCC all helping me to learn.  They coached and gave guidance. I shot a pretty good first score as a result. I spent two years shooting that little SAMCC gun so  learned a bit.  When I fired my postal, South paw was with me and I was able to coach him and share what I had learned with him.

At next Years  Montana Shoot, I am going to hold a SAMCC shoting clinic.  If you want to learn how to shoot these little guns, come to Montana.

And some of us just didn't have a shootin' iron that met the needs of the match.    :'(

Maybe next year I'll have mine rebuilt to where it will fire safely (1/4" trunions now with 1/2" bore).

Some of us have neither the qualified shootin' iron or the range to shoot it at.  The closest I could come to a qualified shooter would be my Morko, but that's not really a miniature (though it is slightly under 1:1).  Guess I gotta get something new for next year...besides the Kracker Krupp... ;D

Yeah, that'll be an interesting Kompetition.  How do you skore flying Krackers?  Shooting Krayons at a target will do, but only for those that ordered the 9mm bore Krupps.  I know we'll have to do some experimenting to see how the Krupps kan best be tested kompetitively.

It's a good thing I just placed an order for 25# of powder.  I'll be able to test the lil pea shooter in every way imaginable!  Hope it doesn't scare the neighbors!

Does it meet the caliber requirements?  It does say miniature, but miniature is not defined

How do you skore flying Krackers?

50% "technical merit" + 50% "presentation"

Just watch out for the Russian judge...
