Good reason for not taking car to dealer shop
« on: January 29, 2010, 03:58:17 AM »
Dealers are always trying to sell you more repairs because they have liability concerns. I didn't know this until a mechanic who works for a dealer explained it to me. The old adage "find a good plumber, find a good mechanic, and treat them well" still holds up.

My work just spent $2300+ on there 2004 f150 at the dealer.
I know it could have been less.

A really good mechanic can make more money with his own shop.

I'm fortunate to have found a very good mechanic.   Both my vehicles have over 140,000 miles on them and he keeps them running smooth for me and doesn't charge me an arm and a leg.  For example he just replaced the shift linkage in my wife's PT Cruiser, did an oil change on it and my truck and replaced the rear shocks on my truck (I supplied the shocks)... My total bill was $153.79.   If you have ever looked under the hood of a PT you know that changing the shift linkage is no easy task.

Have had some experience's, both good and bad, with car dealers. Same with private shops. A tranny shop chain by the name of Cottmans got me for over $3,000 for a so called tranny rebuild that didn't last 6 months. A shop in Pittsburgh said they fixed it, it didn't shift right and was leaking less than a week later, so took it to the Cottmans here in the Toledo area, and they didn't seem to make it any better. When it was acting up again, I was in Columbus,Oh. and there was a Dodge dealer right across the road from where I was at. It was leaking pretty bad, and of course, what they said was, we have to put it on the machine to check it out.($90) And then they told me, well, looks like we need to rebuild the tranny. I said no thanks, just had that done a couple months ago. Bought 6 qts. of tranny fluid to get me back home, took it to a small family owned shop, and they got the leaked stopped for $40.(outside fitting cracked, so they unscrewed the cracked one and screwed in a good one and reconnected the line.
Yep, if you find a good and honest mechanic, treat him well!! gypsyman
