Low Flash 44 Mag powder

I am looking for opinions on a high performing powder for pistols in 44 Magnum, using mostly 240 grain projectiles. I have Alliant 2400 that produces lots of flash with hotter loads. Looking for alternatives.

I'll be watching this thread. I use H110 w/240s and I've noticed some flash in low light........ it'll be interesting to see what folks have come up with.

I doubt if you are going to find a powder that is high performance with out at least some muzzle flash. I use W296 or H110 for my high performance loads and it does produce muzzle flash.

I've had the same results with all of the above mentioned powders. It may just be what you get, but maybe one of "our Gurus" will come up with other options,

I did load some 240's with bullseye a long time ago but they were not high performance by any means, I used them for plinking.  Kinda of a "cat sneeze" round. Dont remember if they flashed much, but there was very little recoil.

power pistol is advertised as a low flash powder but to be honest ive never noticed it had alot less flash then anything else.

 And how long is the barrel for said 44 mag? A slow powder & short barrel will most likely lead to more 'flash'.

I agree..........altho I still try and tweak loads for all the calibers I load for, in .44 mag and 240 jacketed bullets, I have yet to find anything that shoots as accurately as H110/W296 outta my 629 when going for maximum velocities. If I want to go a tad slower IMR4227 works a hair better for me than 2400 outta the long pipe. These two powders are also the best performers outta my X-framed  .460mag,  with the nod going to the 4227 when hunting in extremely cold weather.

............as for the flash. I don't even notice it anymore.

I shoot a five inch Model 29 Classic. Cast bullets seem to reduce flash as compared to jacketed bullets. I may be asking for something that does not exist.

 You can easily make nice mild loads for your 44 mag with some of the faster powders. You can go all the way down to the low end of the 'cowboy action' data,(Hodgdon has a bunch). It's the part about looking for high performance & lower flash loads that may be hard. I load some 200 grn plated bullets with a mild charge of H Universal that are a true pussy cat to shoot. I use the win 296( H 110) for max power loads. You could work along the scale & do a trade off with some of the medium speed powders at a lower performance level than full blown H-110 loads. Unless I need them for the hunt or woods carry I'd rather use less than full power loads.

I have used Red Dot for mid range loads with great results. I like Red Dot since it is readily available as it is popular as a shot gun powder, in eight pound jugs.

I know this is not the best application for 2400, but I have used maximum charges with 180 grain bullets out of the five inch revolver, and WOW, what a huge fire ball that creates.
