45 RCBS 270 SAA bullets
« on: January 29, 2010, 03:55:38 PM »
I have some of these bullets weighting in at 280 gr. Would like some data with HS7.  Something between 900 and 1000. Don't need anything drastic deer here are about 100 lbs. but we have some big hogs. I am using a 45 Ruger Blackhawk.

http://www.loadswap.com/

You didn't say what you were loading them in.
There are a lot of loads that can't be used in Colt or S&W guns, unless you want to buy a new one.
Above are 3 places I could think of, "Loadswap" has some data for RUGER BLACKHAWKS w/ 300 gr. bullets, that will get you started. YOU CANT USE IT IF THE GUN IS NOT A RUGER AND HAS A LARGE FRAME, DON'T USE IT W/ A NEW (SMALLFRAME) GUN, YOU KNOW!!!!!!!
That is all, just wanted everyone to hear that. ;D ;) :)

Looked through all sights and saw none I could use. Igot these bullets sizes to .454 to shoot in a ruger with oversizes cylinder throats. I have been using HS7 because I have plenty. Win. 571 that is. If anyone has any info on load data on either HS7 or Win. 571 with the 270SAA bullet in 45 LC Rugers I would be in hog heaven. Thanks for help.

http://www.imrpowder.com/data/general/burnchart.php
This burn rate chart lists HS-7 as being a lil faster than BlueDot and a lil slower than HS-6.
If you were looking for a midrange load, just get the load data for 300 gr. bullets for HS-6 and data for BlueDot w/ 300 gr. bullets and compare. Stay in the middle and increase your charges carefully, watching for any sticky extraction. There shouldn't be any, but best to err' on the safe side.
If you have a chronograph, that would be even better. Just load w/ caution up to your velocity and thats it.

Just looked thru my pile of loading manuals. Found an old Hodgdon manual, here goes

.45 Colt  7" barrel
275 gr. bullet, doesn't list cast or jacket
HS-7, 13.0 gr = 828 fps = 15,900CUP that is their max. charge, lower that 10% and work up from there.

300 gr. JHP,  HS-7,  12.0 gr.=  771fps.=  16,000CUP max. charge also.
I think, by looking at all their data in the calibers. It looks like HS-7 is just a lil too fast for a real good hunting/velocity loads. How about going and buying some 2400 or H-110, W-296. They will get you higher velocities w/ lower pressures.

BTW what the hell is W-571?

Just went to the Hodgdon website (link above).
They don't even list that powder anymore, I spose you know that. It was most likely not a real good powder to begin with. Stick to the low Colt data that I listed above and use them as plinker loads. Get some 2400 or other slow powder for hunting.  Good Luck.
