Hornady leverevolution ammo in a handgun.
« on: January 30, 2010, 07:48:44 AM »
I have a Ruger GP100 (357mag.) with a 6 inch barrel. I am wondering how this ammo will perform in a handgun. I plan to use it for white tails out to 50 yards. Have any of you tried this ammo in a handgun? Is a 140 grin bullet to light?

I have tryed the .44 mag version in a 10" contender. The farthest I ever shot it was 25 yards as I broke the hammer spring while shooting it. But at 25 it gropped pretty well I'd said 1.5", which for me an unexperienced handgun shooter is pretty good. I would think that at a range no greater than 50 yards it would just fine as long as the shot is where it needs to be.

I'm thinking the ammo may shoot well, but IMHO, for whitetails I think you would be better off with a 158gr JSP. Ballistic-ally there isn't any real advantage of the leverevolution @ .357 ranges and velocities coming outta a six inch pipe...... the heavier weight and better penetration of the JSP would be much more of an asset.

Buck is right on fistmil,

That pointed shape is designed for more retained energy out to 200 + yrds.  @ 50yds. it's not going to make that much difference. The 200gr. Cast Performance LFN bullet that I load for my son's 357 Blackhawk would be a more leathal white tail load.

Good luck with your hunting, Tim.

I agree with those that say you would not gain anything using the leverevolutin  ammo for 50 yard shooting. I have had great success on deer with the 180 Hornady XTP and Hornady manual max load of 13.5 grs H-110, Very accurate and powerful for the 357 mag.

Shot the 44 Mag FTX from my Dad's Henry Bigboy. At a 100yds they have been the most accurate so far.

IMHO, this is what they were designed for.....thus the name LEVERevolution. But again, when using a .357 HANDGUN  for whitetails out to 50 yards, the advantage of a bullet deigned for better penetration, far outweighs the minuscule, if any, accuracy advantage of the leverevolution ammo, and  most of the time, at a better price.
