Rifle is in excellent condition, but stock has alot of crappy looking shellac on it...any suggestions?

You can strip it if its that bad but don't use sandpaper after stripping it use coarse steelwool it will leave no marks. Some stocks I just use coarse steelwool and make the chips even then i have actually gone over the orginal finish with formby's tung oil(try a little spot first to see if it will take) after 4 or 5 coats the stock looks new again. I have even done sks's with that grainy look too and after a few coats its less grainy and looking better. You apply formby's tung oil with a soft cloth putting thin coats on evenly let it dry 24hrs then very fine steelwool inbetween coats then reapply again till the desired finish is present. I have one german k98 sporter that looks like its glass after 6 coats it awesome. BigBill

I use Formby's or the ACE Hardware brand of furniture refinisher. Put on some rubber gloves, get some steel wool, and wipe it on. Keep an old towel handy, and as the varnish "gooks" up, wipe it off until it's the color you want. No sanding, or stripping the wood bare. I then use Minwax finishing wax, and I'm done. Doing a stock takes about 30 minutes.

I would match the color with Minwax stain first just incase you need to blend the stock in with one orginal color too. On my M91/30 after washing them with murphy's wood soap I had to restain the color then tung oil finish them. BigBill
